I'm a little bit lost in these big parts....

Considering, mp4, mkv as mature container and h264 as a major actor in codec, would it be possible to make things clearer ?

Maybe adding subcategories in "new container" and/or "codec" categories. Many other forums do that and this make surfing easyer (but not always) :)

Thanks

Hubert

AVC will get its own forum, but there's definitely not enough MP4 and MKV traffic to warrant their own forums

Yep, that's why I added this "(but not always)". I agree, it could be more difficult.

Great news for AVC :)

Didn't know about the traffic, but there is no regular category foe containers. That's why, perhaps, many people/newbies are still confused (codec/container).

but there is no regular category foe containers.MKV, OGM and MP4 are all very young when compared to AVI.. so they're still very much new. And the forum subtext clearly mentions that those containers go in there, so I don't see the problem.

ok

it was mentionning that codec and container in the same forum categories may be one of the explanation for the no-finishing-confusing codec/container threads.....

Thanks anyway

Any news update of when this might be?when it happens.. the situation has changed quite a bit, and the wait didn't really hurt either.

Do you need any help with finding the old H.264 / AVC threads?

Do you need any help with finding the old H.264 / AVC threads? Not at this point. And splitting up forums, while a tedious task, never really was a problem.. it just takes time. But that isn't the reason while we still have the status quo.

May I know which reason ?

It has been more and more difficult to broswe this forum.

I cannot agree with your findings.. the codecs forum is just very interesting now.. I don't see it as cluttered.

The reason is to decide what to really do. Create an AVC forum? Create an x264 Forum? Create a NeroDigital forum? Status quo? Each of those has its advantages and disadvantages.

Personally speaking I would prefer that all variants of Mpeg4/AVC/H.264/x264 etc be discussed in the same section. As it should make it easier for people to understand that all the implementations are in essence the same. Or at the very least aspiring to offer most if not all MPEG-4 Part 10 (ISO 14496-10) has to offer... With the exception of the container!

I feel, in the long term it would be most confusing to fragment Mpeg4/AVC the different variants. Take Nero for instance, although their variant has only been available (to the general public) for a few months, they already appear to have created of an "image association problem" for themselves, as many people automatically assume NeroDigital only offers Mpeg4/AVC..... Wow, what ever happened to their year old Mpeg4/ASP implementation!

Plus, while all the Mpeg4/AVC variants are still in the early stages of development, if discussions are kept within the same section, everybody can keep tabs on what everybody else is (or is not) developing!

@SMD: all those things, and a lot more has already been internally discussed and I have no intention of having the same discussion again in public. I'll make a decision when I make one and that's the best I can give you.

Does the discussion continue ?

It has been for more than two month now.

Thanks

Finally !

thanks

PS : need just a new container section now (like mkv) :)

what new container section? Breaking out any container from the current container forum would result in a forum that doesn't have enough traffic to sustain its survival.
