I've done alot of rips and always followed the 40-60% Rule as mentioned in the GKNOT use guide on Doom9. Hasnt this changed over time and with the introduction of new versions of Divx/Xvid? I mean there must be a more sure fire way of calculation the estimated quality result nowadays?

Gknot is superb though. Thanks lenox and all who made it possible

To be honest I'm surprised to see those values in the guide. Only under exceptional circumstances you should allow percentage to go under 50%. Most modern clean sources should be encoded with a value at least 60% (for instance AutoGK always aims for ~70%).

Best practice these days seems to be 60-80%.

damn, well luckily I always aimed for over 60%, just of late after re-reading that guide I started going for below 50%, and also the 5% of total video to get the % value, its default 5%, should that change too?

personally I would never go under 70 % with matrices like H263, or even 80%, it looks unbearable otherwise I think. Now if you use a matrix like 6of9 hvs, you will get very good results with a compression of around 40-50 (in general), so my opinion is that you should make your own guidelines according to your taste (I know, fat lot of help :D)

For the compression test, obviously, the bigger the %age, the more accurate the result, but then, it's not meant to take all night either. I find 5% a good balance between speed and accuracy personally.

thanks, I just use Divx5 and simple rules, stick to 5%, stick to over 60%.
