No postprocessing in MPC

Hello!

I'm using the latest version of Media Player Classic (MPC) and I'm using VMR7 renderless mode for playback. But in this mode not a single codec uses any postprocessing filters (not Xvid, Divx, MPC's internal MPEG2 decoder, etc.) with MPC. In all other modes it does. But I need this mode, so I can display the subtitles. There's another mode, called VMR9 renderless which can also display subtitles, but it's grayed out, so I can't select it. Do I need DX9 installed?
I'm using Win XP Pro on Athlon 1.33 GHz with 512 Mb RAM and geforce 2 MX 32 Mb RAM graphics card.

yes, you need DX9 for VMR-9.
but i don't quite understand what you mena by "not a single codec uses any postprocessing filters". postprocessing is a feature that you can turn on in the configuration of a decoder filter. is it somehow not possible to enable it while using VMR-7 ? how do you know that postprocessing is off ?

I know that each codec uses a config dialog where you can set the postprocessing on or off, and I have postprocessing on in Xvid and Divx codecs. But when playing back the movie the postprocessing is not being applied. How do I know this? Because I can clearly see the difference when I watch the same file in BSPlayer for instance. The picture there is much less blocky and overall looking much nicer then in MPC. But I need NPC for SVCD playback.

That can't be, as the postprocessing is applied before the renderer does *anything*, and the renderer can't tell the decoder to skip postprocessing.

Are you sure it's not the renderer's scaling (from your video's size to the frame size you've chosen) that's blocky?

If that's the case, try setting your desktop resolution as close to the video size as possible and set the zoom to 100% in MPC. If the picture looks fine that way then your renderer is using point resizing which of course looks crappy - but I only ever get this if DirectShow is using a VfW codec and the VfW wrapper for decoding...

I don't know. I'm pretty new to all this. It might be the renderer's scaling problem as well. But it does that only in VMR7 renderless mode (the one that is needed for displaying the subtitles), if I switch to something else (like VMR7 windowed or any other) the picture looks ok, not blocky at all, the way it should. So is MPC's renderer scaling somehow in VMR7 renderless mode the cluprint of all this?
How can I fix this?

Well, since you don't seem to have DirectX 9 installed - do it. It'll replace VMR7 with VMR9, which really should work. Alternatively, you could also use VSFilter or ffdshow for the subtitles and use the overlay mixer in MPC, which probably will also be easier on your CPU...
