Hi
i thnk this comes under authoring ?
i would like to take several vcd's of a series i own/backed up and put them on 1 dvd disc as a backup, how would i do this, so that in future i could go back and "lift" 1 vcd to burn again to cd.
the object is to use 1 x dvd as opposed to say 5 or 6 cd's.
it would be handy to be able to watch them as vcd , save keep changing the discs in the player as well
is this actually possible
P.S the player is a dvd player that happily plays vcd
many thanks

i would say you would would want to reauthor them to dvd (dvd does allow for vcd resolution) dvdlab is friendly for this. you will probably have to use vcdgear to convert the .dat file to mpeg then you can drop that mpeg right into dvdlab. if you ever needed to convert it back to vcd you would then use dvddecrypter to demux in ifo mode (each movie separately) and then use your favorite vcd authoring app to remake the vcd..

One potential pitfall.
Whilst VCD resolution MPEG1 video does fall in DVD specifications, VCD audio, sampled at 44100Hz, does not.

There is a danger that unless you resample the audio to 48000Hz, the DVD will play without audio. I know Pioneer players, among others, choke on 44100 Audio on DVD's even though they play it fine from (S)VCD's!

TMPGEnc DVD Author will automatically resample for you but there is a nominal quality loss. Not sure about DVD-Lab for this, I've never tried.

However, if you convert the audio for DVD, you would need to convert back to restore to VCD, which again costs a bit of quality.

Hopefully this will all be academic and your player will accept 44100Hz MP2 audio on DVD.
