View Full Version : Interlaced... Strangely

Okay, so I'm back from the Xenosaga problem. Now I've been video capturing MGS3 footage, and that has been giving me a tough time. Particularly, if I deinterlace using said (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=81530&highlight=xenosaga) method, it should deinterlace progressive 30 fps, right?
Well, MGS3 seems to be interlacing strangely; to put it more precisely, portions of the image are interlaced, rather than portions of the video itself are interlaced. I don't know what to make of this, guys. Any ideas?
Here's a sample video. (http://webhome.idirect.com/~tihhhuhv/test.avi)
EDIT: A better way to put it is that I'm dealing with video that's interlaced, and having a variable frame rate (rather than Xenosaga's consistent 30 fps).

The test.avi will not open in VirtualDub. What codec is it? Is it corrupted?

Velocity 7:
What's the problematic part? Is it frames 32 and 33?

It's Xvid, so who knows what buggy version I have installed. What version should I use?
I get failed to decode frame 0 in Vdub. Error -100.

That version of XviD works for me too. Thank you.
Velocity 7, what exactly are you drawing our attention to? I don't see anything unusual.
Of course it is possible for only portions of a frame to show combing. The simplest reason is that there are static picture areas! Beyond that, you can have interlaced video overlayed on progressive video; you can have clips with different telecine patterns overlayed; the material may have been composed using a clip that was previously deinterlaced using a threshold, so that it retains some combs, but only in some picture areas, etc.

Neuron2, this clip real-time 3D rendered video game footage. The only overlaying going on is the text and status bars and stuff.
Velocity 7 - are you talking about like in frame 42 where only 2/3 of the screen is interlaced? I think this issue may be caused by "tearing" - it happens often in games when there's no vertical sync implemented in order make the game run a bit faster. It causes portions of the screen to be refreshed at different times on occasions, though, like in frames 41-48 in your example.
The framerate seems to be varying greatly, making the tearing uneven through time.
