help : h.264 file can not be played.

i converted an mpeg2 file to h.264 using virtaldub-mpeg2 and ffdshow encoder.
there was no problem during conversion and i could see the output video.
i tried to open the output file using media player classic ,but there was no video and it just played audio.it could not be played with other players at all.:(
i have enabled h.264 decoder in ffdshow configuration.
i checked the file using GSpot and it showed that the codecs were installed.

so... what's wrong with this file ? :confused:

maybe you can post a screenshot of what gpsot says?

grap the fourcc changer tool (comes with koepis xvid builds), open the .avi and check what fourcc is used and make sure that it is supported in ffdshow

hm strange, did you set "ffds" as fourcc when encoding with ffdshow? maybe try to use something listed using h264 or avc

fourcc changer? that's too complex. I just use the simple, neverfail program "avic"

first time i set h264 as fourcc.as i said there was just audio.
i installed videosoft h.264 codec.
then tried other fourccs : DAVC, AVC1, VSSH.
for DAVC and AVC1 gspot says codecs are not installed.
and VSSH again has just audio not video but gspot says codecs are installed. :confused:

maybe i have to install other h.264 codecs ... ?

nope, i think there is something borked in the file, try encoding with normal virtualdub, maybe its the mpeg-2 mods fault

also tell us the exact settings you used in the h.264 encoder

normal virtualdub can't open mpeg2 files. i tried virtualdubmod and got the same result.

encoder : h.264
fourcc : h.264
mode : one pass - constant bitrate
bitrate : 861 kbps

what is the meaning of the following error given by gspot when trying to render ?

you can also try to play the file in other non-directshow players, like videolan and mplayer

i think virtual dub mod can open mpeg2s and it writes valid avis with ffdshow x264..

well.... think i got the reason !
i checked my system using a codec detector software named "sherlock" and i got the message below :

uninstalling and installing ffdshow for several times (various versions) i got the same message , so the problem is likely ffdshow codec.
is there any other (free) h.264 codec to install and test with ?
