I was poking around on the Internet and saw that dual-layer media is down to like $2 a pop. Great, I thought... it's time to start burning DVDs without shrinking them! So I ordered some media and a burner. The media came fast (www.rima.com rules! :) ). But it's dual-sided, something I didn't notice, or know I had to consider. Is this "dual layer" just really only two sides? Am I not going to be able to make a "real" DVD that I can play in a home DVD player?

Dual-layer media (as the name says) is comprised of two layers, one on top of the other, overlaid on the same side of the disc
Those are still quite expensise these days
Another totally distinct animal is double-sided media: these you burn data on both sides, one layer on each
Of course if you wanna play one side after the other you have to turn the disc over, unlike dual layer, which plays one layer after the other seamlessly (or at least it should...)

Seems like you bought double-sided media, not dual layer
