Dropped Frames with All-in-Wonder

Hello,

I have had a problem capturing with an All-in-Wonder 128, and AiW 9000.

Every time I try to reencode the MPEG-2 files recorded by the packaged software, the video is out of sync. I know, after searching, that that's because of dropped frames. I have tried everything I could find/think of, but nothing has worked. I need to reencode the video to XviD or DivX, but using free software.

I was hoping that someone here would know what to do.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I don't use AIW hardware ... but in general, audio desync is not not necessarily dropped frames, but rather, from using different hardware to process the audio and video.

Dropped frames should result in duplicate frames, not "missing" frames.

Does your software report a dropped frame count?

With software MPEG-2 encoding while capturing, you are dependant on your CPU for encoding, and you do have a few choices that can reduce dropped frame counts: FAQ Q21 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32575) provides a number of common suggestions.

One suggestion that is not in the FAQ, but may be helpful to those trying to simultaneously encode in MPEG while capturing, is to set the Group of Pictures (GOP) to be 100% Intra frames (I-frames, or keyframes). This is equivalent to a series of JPEG pictures, and because there are no frame interdependencies: your dropped frame count should reduce The resulting file will be easier to edit, as you can splice at any frame.Recording in this manner will consume more disk space than having the usual Predictive and Bidirectional frames (P-frames and B-frames, respectively), but should reduce CPU consumption with everything else being equal.

The way I read your post it seems that your problem is with encoding the Xvid/DivX file. If that's correct and your MPEG-2 is in sync, what are you using to encode the XviD/DivX file? If you're certain your captured MPEG-2 is out of sync, you may want to search or post here:
