Which forum would I go to to find out about converting .AVI files to a format that will burn on DVD and play as a DVD?

You won't like the results. Your quality can only get worse than what you have now. We would all recommend you return to your original sources.

But if you insist on going forward, start with Doom9's Format Conversion Guides (http://www.doom9.org/conversionguides.htm). Then, when you have specific questions, post in the appropriate forum, or post here.

Your best bet might be to try out one of the AVI to DVD Guides, such as here (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/avi2dvdr.htm) or here (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm), and if you have any problems along the way, do what jggimi said above.

Hi jggimi. I had already looked up the links when I saw your reply posted. So I decided to post anyway, even though I was going to say pretty much the same thing as you.
