View Full Version : Dual layer question

Hi all.
This is my first post here so I hope I am doing it right.
I have now ripped 3 movies with the helpful information supplied by Doom9. I now have a question relating to Dual-Layer ripping.
My DVD burner is capable of burning a dual layer DVD. What is the proceedure in ripping if I want the DVD contents ripped onto a dual- layer DVD?
Can I just 'copy disk' as I would normaly copy a CD with Nero 6 or do I still have to run it through a program, if so which one?
DVD Decoder or/and DVD Shrink.
I ask this because I want to rip a music DVD that runs out to 2 hours and 48 minutes and if I compress that onto a single layer I feel that the end result may suffer.
Your advise, and any other advice relating to Dual-Layer burning would be most appreciated.
Regards

If you have an NTFS partition (2000/XP) use DVDecrypter in "Mode/ISO/Read"
Read original DVD to harddrive. Make sure you have enough space on hardrive
Once it's finished 'decrypting' the DVD, set it to "Mode/ISO/Write" and burn ISO to a blank dvd-r (dual layer of course)
If you have say Win98/Me, make a temp folder and open dvdecrypter again.
This time set it to "Mode/File" and set the output to your temp folder.
Ensure all files on DVD are highlighted in DVDecrypter
Make sure you have enough space on hardrive;)
Now you could easily use Nero to burn the file now that they are 'decrypted". Make sure that you use the DVD-Video template in Nero which will use the correct setting for DVD.
You must realize Nero will not copy "Encrypted" discs....this is why we must first "Decrypt" them:)
Oh, welcome to the forum :D

Check the size or your original dvd as dual layer writable discs are NOT the same size as commercial dual layer ones.
Commercial = 9.4GB
writable = 8.5GB

Thank you The Edge.
That was a nice prompt reply. I will make a hard copy of your instructions to use as reference as I do not for see me burning a Dual layer for a little while yet.
I priced a blank dual layer in Perth W.A. and was quoted at A$11.95 each as apposed to 80 Cents for a single layer DVD in a bulk pack, so I wait a bit (unless of cause it is a 'must have' rip)
Thank you for the welcome.

Thank you also DVD_Maniac. I did not know there was a difference in dual layer sizes.
How would I go about checking the actual sizes on the DVD's?

janset,
the simplest way would be to load the dvd in question in your dvd-reader/writer and use windows explorer to check the properties/size of the disc.
alternatively you could also use DVDDecrpter to open the disc in ISO/Read mode and it will correctly give the size in the disc information window
cheers

Can I just point out that you can use ISO Read / Write modes regardless of which filesystem your HDDs use or which operating system you're running.
This contradicts what 'The Edge' said earlier in his / her post - but of course I know my program better than he/she does ;)

@ LIGHTNING UK: really? how does it deal with images larger than 4 Gig? does it split them? - i'd try myself, but the last time i had a Winbox running FAT was when i was still on my 486 with win 95 ;)
(oh well and now my HD based mp3 player, which i do not consider apropriate for the task either though...)

Hehe....been so long since I last used a FAT32 OS :o
I guess I'm more used to other ISO apps that don't split the ISO.
Cheers for the heads up LIGHTNING UK.....good work!
NB: Oh, I'm a bloke if that makes a difference:)

Yes it splits them just before the 4GB limit. It then creates an MDS file that's used to load the split files back in and make it look like 1 big image. Of course this MDS file can also be used by other programs that support it - i.e. Deamon Tools, Alcohol 120% etc.

I think LIGHTNING UK is being a little modest about DvdDecrypter's capabilities. I have ripped, reauthored and written to DL discs using no more than DvdShrink and DvdDecrypter.
I prefer DvdDecrypter over DvdShrink for ripping to HD because DvdDecrypter reports bad reads and retries whereas I'm not sure what DvdShrink does.
I use Traxdata DL discs and I've only had one coaster, and that was due to me not applying a firmware upgrade.
