i got an idea, i hope one of our pros can code, else i'll try my luck myself...:

a sharpness mask plugin
it should -with some parameters- create a mask that is shows which parts of the picture are sharper then others

besides being possibly usefull for functions the code could be re-used in plug-ins

hope someone will be interested in doing it

What you want is an edge mask : use the masktools.

i thought an edge mask would just show edges, as the name says

i meant it more like this: let's say one scene shows 2 faces, one is in focus, the other is not
the the first one would be a dark area on the mask, the other not
