I apologize if this post is in the wrong forums; as you can tell I'm new here and since I'm encoding using AutoGK I figured this would be the right place.
I'm in the process of backing up some Cartoon DVD sets and I want to make sure I'm on the right track. I'm using DIVX (I have a DIVX Pro license so I thought I'd put it to work) and choosing 352px wide (implicit choice of 240px high?) and a filesize of 80MB.
My choice of filesize is based on the fact that 80MB 30min cartoon files tend to look pretty good at this resolution, even when viewed fullscreen on a 19" monitor. While I'm happy with the choice, I'm certainly open to suggesitons.
What I really want to know is if the resolution I've chosen is OK for viewing on portable devices; as far as I can tell the Archos supports 704px height files, so I think 352 is a good choice. If anyone else has another opinion, please share...
I was thinking today that maybe 320 is a better choice since it is "half" of 640 and might be the resolution of the next great toy to come along (something like the next ZVUE or a Treo with a better screen...) Also, most of the new mobile devices (like the ZVUE and Treo) currently accomodate 160px height IIRC, so I would assume they would be able to resample the 320px height file without having to re-encode (am I wrong about this?)
Is resampling a compressed DIVX .avi a problem? I ultimately want to make some files that I can feel comfortable about in the sense of not having to re-encode from source down the road. If I can setup a macro to re-encode my files to 160 or 320 if need-be then I suppose there's no problem, although my EE classes from college make me believe that might not be such a hot idea.
