Ripping VR mode DVD-RW's?

I notice that if I record a VR mode DVD-RW on a stand alone Pioneer DVD recorder and finalize it it will play with WinDVD on the PC. The file structure on the DVD consists of a folder called DVD_RTAV a file in the root called .Sys-Reserved-RW-Bitmap.GROW and in the folder 2 files called VR_MANGR.IFO and VR_MOVIE.VRO

Is there any way to rip these into MPEG2 video and audio streams for editing? Or would I have to record TV shows in normal DVD mode?

I have a Panasonic which seems to generate a similar file set (on DVD-RAM disks). You can get an editable MPEG file by simple renaming the .VRO file with an .MPG extension. This can then be loaded into an editor like Womble MPEG-VCR and edited as you wish.

I don't know whether Pioneer-generated VRO files are the same but it's worth a try.
