I'm new to this burning stuff and would like to know what's the best software for BACKING up my DVD"s. Of course I need one that removes all the copy-protected code. I'm using DVDShrink now, is that the best? When I Backup my Smallville DVD"S it took over 9 hours, is that Normal? Also I get some distortion when playing it back, is that normal because of the compression? Will any other software eliminate the distortion?

Any input will be greatly appreciated....

Thanks

Welocme to the forum:

There's really no "best" software. What is best for you is what fits your specific needs/wants, and how hard you're willing to work at learning new software. Take a look at the DVD Backup Guides (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm), this page may give you some inspiration. Poke around there and you'll get a better feel for what some of the different backup app's do, and the level of complexity involved.

I ran a search here and over at the DVDshrink forum, too, and found only one report of a problem with Smallville--Season 2, Episode 6. By chance, is this the one you're trying to backup?

No, nine hours is way out of whack for a Shrink transcode, likewise, it's abnormal to experience distortion with Shrink unless you've been victimized by inferior media. The first thing I'd do, is uninstall both Shrink and DVDDecrypter and execute a fresh install. If you're still experiencing problems, look elsewhere on your system and/or come back with feedback on what you've done and what's going on with your issue.

First of all, I would like to thank you for your response and do forgive me for my lack of knowledge in this area. The question I have is about DVD Decrypter. What does it do and why do I need it. DVDshrink seems to do the job (decrypt, compress and Burn) granted takes longer but is does the process.

Thank you again

Don't see where the problem is :) Yes, dvdshrink can do it all, so it satisfies your needs, that's probably all you'll need. some people still prefer to use dvddecrypter first for various reasons. sometimes you'll find out that dvddec can rip a dvd that dvdshrink can't, but until then, i guess you'll be fine using 'just' dvdshrink.

cheers

If you find DVD Shrink takes too much time, you can uncheck deep analysis for faster results.

but you also have to keep in mind that it has an influence on the output quality...
