I'm confused. I am still waiting for the 'all singing, all dancing' player. But I cannot see that happening for some time yet.
What I want now or soon is something that can play nearly everything in the AVI container you throw at it including XViD with QPEL, GMC, Packed Bitsream and possibly extra warp points. Also needs to be able to play AC3 in AVI, MP3 and Ogg (Not too fussed about OGM's and MKV's but that would be cool if it could). Important is the ability to playback seperate sub files like SRT format (Long filenames and centered with a decent sized outline font).
Is there anything that comes remotely close yet?

3pt GMC = you need XBMP or another pc based solution as no chipset can do 3 pt GMC

Sadly Doom9 is correct :(
Bizarrely, not even the new "NeroDigital" certified player(s) support 3WP GMC.
Currently, one of the fullest spec'd "standard-def" players is the Momitsu V880N: -

But players fitted with the trusty MediaTek chip-set, still seem to offer very good value for money. As well as PAR/DAR detection 1WP GMC and Qpel

well for .ogm playback and quite good .srt support you should consider the 2 pioneer players DV-470/DV-575. they recently updated their Mediatek firmware and seem to play ogm files now and also support multiple .srt files for different languages. don't know if other Mediatek players will manage this also soon.
you can compare them here: http://www.divxtest.com/resultats.php3

I assume people already know this but if you have a modded xbox (you can buy these on ebay and in some shops) it can play everything and play it well.
Its homepage is at http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/info_faq.htm and it is freeware. A list of exactly what it plays is at http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/info_project.htm#point_release which I won`t post here as it`s pretty long but the more well known formats it can play are:
DivX, Xvid, RealMedia, Quicktime files, Ogg, Ogm, Matroska, VIVO, Theora, ASF, WMV, 3ivx, H264, AC3, DTS, MP4, Mpeg 1, Mpeg 2, Mpeg 3 and also the picture formats such as Jpeg, Bitmap, Tif, Png and so on.
It has full screen playback of all supported formats, zoom, automatic enabling of Pal 50 and 60 Hz modes, supports multiple subtitles in an avi, video calibration, supports streaming files via a Tivo or the internet / PC, customisable processing filters, flicker filter, control with remote or joypad, supoorts cue and bin disc images directly and some other features.
It caches data from the disc to the built in hard drive so you always have smooth playback and for pal users can change the framerate from 23.xx to Pal 25 frames per second.
Makes a very good standalone if you have one modded :D

Yeah! After a while not writing on doom9 forum I come back to confirm this one.
I've just purchased a Pioneer 470 and updated it to firmware 2.09!
It reads my .ogm files!
To be honest, it just reads the video stream and the first audio stream.
Second audio stream is reported but not played.
Embedded subtitle streams are not reported and not played.
External subtitle files (*.srt) are played.
My ogm files contain :
a Xvid video stream (2 B-Frame, no gmc, no packed bitstream, no qpel (qpel is reported to be played));
two Ogg audio streams;
two srt subtitle streams.
Moreover it converts NTSC to PAL and thus my 15 (and more) years old TV has still some time to live!!
Bye, eXi!!

my brother just bought the 470 too. Can confirm .ogm (DIVX5) support with only first audio track (of two) and no chapter support for the included chapter marks. It also plays my oversized 793MB file on a 90min cdr.

No mention of DiVX subtitle support in that list. Or XviD with 3 warp points etc. :)

It should support DivX XSUB Subtitles as it is DivX Certified.
