Playback problems with MPEG and MPC

Sorry, I couldn't find a forum that fit the description of mpeg troubles. The dvd one is close, but not really my problem as my dvd playback software works.

I've got a problem with the playback of mpeg files using media player classic (latest version). Not sure what I did but starting about a week ago whenever I opened mpeg files (also seems to happen with mpeg-2 files) in MPC the output was really dark, usually you can't see anything though on occasion you can make out some vauge outlines. The problem does not seem to cross over to windows media player 10 and my dvd playback software seems to still work (windvd6).

Before uninstalling and re-installing ffdshow in the configuration menu for codecs I noticed it said "disabled broken" for the mpeg and mpeg2 codecs and tried changing it to libavcodec/libmpeg2 but to no avail. I tried again just now and nothing seems to change but it doesn't say "broken" like before.
Also in an unrelated but perhaps similar note I've had trouble playing back wmv/asf files in media player classic for as long as I can remember in terms of seeking, it takes a good 5-10 seconds to get to a new place and is very annoying (its pushed me to use WMP 10 to view such files)

I cleaned out my video codecs from system in control panel and reinstalled ffdshow but to no avail. Heres the output from avicodec of my installed codecs:

Windows XP pro SP1
Latest ffdshow - uninstalled and re-installed
Latest xvid

Oh crap, I just realized this would go better in the software players folder, can a mod move it please? It won't let me delete the thread =/

Are MPC's internal mpeg decoders disabled?
Is it just mpeg's? Is output set to overlay? VMR7/9?
Did you try one of my builds?
Been a couple of days, but nothing your end seems to have changed.


In older builds off ffdshow mpeg decoding was broken.

Holy crap this embarassing, as it turns out the internal whatever's brightness/contrast/saturation was too low (as seen here (http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/before.jpg)) After reseting (http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/after.jpg) it everything went back to normal.

I downloaded one of your builds but I have no idea what a .7z file is, it didn't work as a .zip .rar or .exe =/

Off topic but now that the primary problem has been solved any thoughts on the wmv one? I messed with ffdshows config for windows media files but the seeking issue remains.

Actually winrar since I think v3.40 supports 7z archives. Most pages contain a link to the 7-zip site anyway.

Have you checked the option for WMV files under tweaks?

You mean this (http://home.comcast.net/~jdub8/tweak.jpg)? I've tried with it enabled and dissabled but didn't notice much difference either way.

And my version of winrar must be getting old (3.30), I'll have to update.

Okay now I have a new problem with mpeg's, its not a major one but it is annoying. They don't show up as the correct length, they seem to add about 30% to the time line in MPC (IE I have a 4:30 file and it shows up as 5:50 in length). I would think this would be caused by a broken codec but I have no idea how to fix it. :confused:

This all mpg's? Because it could be a case of broken mpg's. I only have one handy but it displays the correct length.

No this happened on three different ones, downloaded off of a reputable website. I opened them in WMP10 and they were correct in length.
