View Full Version : How To: encode/select one episode only?

I just started using AutoGK and followed the tutorial. There's one thing that I am wanting to do. I used DVDDecryptor and got lots of VTS_01_PGC_01_<number 1 to 7>.VOB files. When I load the folder with IFO file up in AutoGK there's no way I can chose to Divx a particular episode - it only encodes the entire DVD folder.
Do I have to use DVD2AVI to manually select the chapter/episode? I notice the episodes are split across the VOB files (eg. episode 3 could be across half of VOB 1 and VOB 2, etc.

Hi-
Did you rip in IFO Mode with DVDDecrypter to begin with? If not, then you should have. But I'll assume you did, and that all the episodes are on one long PGC. In that case, ordinarily each episode will have an equal number of chapters. So, for example, if there are 4 episodes, and 20 chapters in total, then each episode will usually consist of 5 chapters. Decrypt by chapters, and set up a different folder for each episode. If there's an extra chapter after doing the division, then it's usually a dummy. To use the previous example, if there are 21 chapters, ignore the last one. There may be exceptions to what I've just said, but it shouldn't be so hard to figure out how many chapters are in each episode.

Woo woo woo. I don't understand all this PGC, chapters, episodes terminology talk. "Decrypt by chapters"? How? Yep I ripped it in IFO mode and got one long PGC file. But is there a relationship between a episode and a ripped file (vob file)? Or is that episode still split across between two vob files? I got a bunch of vob files, a text file and a PGC file.

...I don't understand all this PGC, chapters, episodes terminology talk...
DVD's are structured into Program Chains (PGCs), Chapters, and Cells. Most "episode" DVDs are authored in one of two ways: One episode per PGC Multiple episodes per PGCIf b, then typically, each episode will be one chapter, two chapters, three chapters ... etc.
For help on DVD structures, see http://www.doom9.org/dvd-structure.htm.
..."Decrypt by chapters"? How? ...
See the chapters in the image? PGC 1 is selected, and all chapters are selected. Note also, that Chapter 1 contains only one Cell. You may clear or check boxes, to rip less than a PGC. This image is from Doom9's DVD Decrypter Guide (http://www.doom9.org/dvddec.htm):

...But is there a relationship between a episode and a ripped file (vob file)? Or is that episode still split across between two vob files? ... The relationship between episodes and PGC or Chapter will depend upon the choices of the DVD author, as stated above.
Do not think of VOB files individually. Think of a VOB as a set of files, broken apart at 1 GB increments, for convenience. A 7GB VOB set will be made up of 7 files, but should be considered one single structure.
A VOB set will contain one or more PGCs. Each PGC is made up of one or more Chapters. Each Chapter is made up of one or more Cells.
Each PGC will contain one or more video streams ("Angles"), one or more soundtracks, and optionally, one or more sets of subtitles.
An IFO rip will select a single angle of video from a single PGC, along with associated streams.

And therefore, using my example in my first post, if there are 20 chapters and 4 episodes on your DVD, right-click one of the chapters, "Select None", and then recheck the first 5 chapters. decrypt it, and then play it to make sure you got the complete first episode. The ones after that should be easy.

I have a followup question...
Is there some way to split the chapters out individually but in a batch method?
I have the Spiderman '67 collection for my son and would like to make individual chapters as files for easier travel w/ him.
I know I can do one chapter at a time but it would be great if I could do them all at once but in separate files.
Thanks!

AGK requires DVD Decrypter. If you were using GK instead, it may be possible to do what you want by using VStrip (http://www.doom9.org/vstrip.htm), since without the add-on GUI it is command line based. But I've never tried it, and I suspect that learning how to do it would take longer and be more difficult than ripping episodes individually through DVD Decrypter.

Yeah, that was my concerned. At some point, I'd like to learn more about all of this, but at this stage, I should probably be happy w/ what I've got.
If anyone knows a simple solution for what I'm trying to do, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!
