View Full Version : XviD Playback Issues; Strange "Smudging"

Hi all. I've recently downloaded some XviD encoded AVIs that are really screwy. At first, I thought it was an isolated issue, but then I came to realize that I've actually found it in a number of XviD videos.

When I playback the video, it "smudges", and then suddenly corrects itself (I assume it does so when it hits a keyframe). Some of the smudging is colored strange, as well. Green and red are popular colors.

I have Koepi's XviD binary installed, 1.0.2. I have no idea what DirectShow filter I'm using, or how to even find out. I realize this is something I should know, having been a student of high quality video compression for years. So, at the moment, I'm feeling rather ignorant.

So, speaking of DirectShow, how DO I determine which filter I'm using? I've noticed that no matter what options I choose under the "XviD Decoder" the output never changes.

This has been an issue both before and after reformatting my whole system. And no, I didn't reformat just because of this. :)

Strangely, before I reformated, such videos would play fine in DivX Player 2.6 but not in Classic Media Player 6.4.8.2 or Media Player 10. Now they don't run fine in any player.

Could it be that these videos were encoded with an old version of XviD or with a non-Koepi binary? I once had problems caused by the latter issue.

INFO ON MY PC:
--------------
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz processor
PC Chips M916 V1.3A, chipset M916-Y2KC mainboard
eVGA nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB video card
Creative SB Live! 5.1 sound card
512MB DDR RAM, PC4400
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind I like Classic Media Player 6.4.8.2 the most.

Thanks,

Kalorx

Have you read rule 6?

Geez, sorry, I forgot -- no need to be pissy about it! The videos have always been AVI.

EDIT: Uh, speaking of DirectShow, how DO I determine which filter I'm using? I've noticed that no matter what options I choose under the "XviD Decoder" the output never changes.

Doesn't really matter if these aren't files you have personally encoded you can not discuss them here as that breaks the rules.

"Please specify the container format you are encoding to/PLAYING FROM."

I took this as meaning I could discuss ANY video file. Plus, on a quick browse of the forums, I didn't find a better category. "Software Players" was an idea, but this being an XviD issue, I decided to bring it up here.

And do you enjoy being a jerk? I mean, the least you could do is point me somewhere where I might find help. I understand the importance of rules, but HEAVEN FORBID you actually help someone -- even a little!

And, lastly, the real Obi-Wan Kenobi would never be so rude. Please try and live up to the name you have chosen.

Rule 6 is this: "No warez, cracks, serials or illegally obtained copyrighted content! Links to content of a questionable nature, asking for, offering, or asking for help/helping to process such content in any way or form is not tolerated."

Which is exactly what you are doing and you aren't allowed. Sorry that you don't like following the rules, but too damn bad.

Xvid bitstream version of the files? Are they mod16? Do they use brames, qpel or gmc? Quant matrix used?

Rule 6 is this: "No warez, cracks, serials or illegally obtained copyrighted content! Links to content of a questionable nature, asking for, offering, or asking for help/helping to process such content in any way or form is not tolerated."

Where did that come from? I can't find that anywhere... I thought you were referring to the XviD forum rules. (I which case, I counted wrong; providing the container was actually not rule 6...)

And how, friend, do you know I'm talking about such heinous material? Can you see my PC's contents? Or are you just making a guess? Although you'll have to trust me on this, I certainly did pay for these AVIs. Use that amazing imagination of yours to come up with what kind of videos we're talking about. :)

I can tell you one thing for certain -- none of them have anything in common and were all encoded by different people. Based on the fairly poor visual quality of the videos, I doubt anything fancy was used in the encoding process.

That last paragraph was basically one big way of saying, "I have no clue, or even a clue as to find how to get a clue." Man, all this talk is reminding me how much I have yet to learn about working with audio and video. Yah gotta love it! One day you know more than everybody you know and you're worshipped for your matchless knowledge, and the next day you're begging for information you should already know. Oh well. Such is life.

Anyway, to get this out of the way, I certainly did pay for these AVIs (unlike what ObiKenobi is claiming). This of course makes me irked as to the fact they're not of higher quality.

I think the problem may be what filter I'm using. How do I determine which filter I'm using, and how might I change it?

I've heard an awful lot about DirectShow filters over the years, and I'm ashamed to say I never did much research on the subject. The only DirectShow filters I know of are the ones I use in GraphEdit to work with audio files.

Because of your previous statement:

I've recently downloaded some XviD encoded AVIs that are really screwy.

When someone mentions files they've downloaded it's 99% of the time not something they've legally obtained. Also the fact that you don't know which version of XviD these are encoded with also show that you didn't make these yourself, also a good sign this is something you've illegally downloaded.

So if these are actually legal files, I apologize, but like I said 99% of the time when people ask questions like this they are trying to get help to play illegally downloaded movies, etc.

You're right of course. I apologize. I'm just feeling defensive is all, because I asked for help and was flat-out denied because of an assumption -- no matter what the chances were it may have been correct.

Where to find the forum rules:

kopei lays down the law :D

is it just me or have there been a lot of ppl coming here with downloaded movies recently?

btw...

You downloaded the movies, and you didnt encode them yourself. There's nothing else to it. Sorry dude, we dont help pirates around here.

If you were to actually use the happy little search button (more rules), you might be able to find something about your problem, as it was a heavily discussed topic awhile back.

Please click on this announcement (http://forum.doom9.org/announcement.php?s=&forumid=6) from the Newbie forum. It will help explain Rule 6 in more detail.

Thank you.

The the love of god, have you all even read my last messages?! I paid for these movies -- they're porn movies, alright?! I wanted to avoid saying that, but I guess now I have to. Haven't any of you heard of pay sites?!

None of you even have the courtesy of asking about the AVIs before you label me a pirate! I simply cannot believe how I've been treated since coming to Doom9's forums!

You know, if this weren't one of the only places on the I and others could get help for these sorts of things, I'd dump this place faster than a space shuttle's re-entry and steer everyone I know and meet away!

EDIT:
Oh, and in regards to your "Newbie" announcement, I didn't go to that forum because I am not a newbie! I have a lot of experience with audio and video compression; or, at the very least, more than most people.

You're right, we didn't ask if your content happened to be legal. We don't ask. See items 1 and 2 in the announcement link I referenced above, as to our reasoning.

You are not required to agree with that reasoning. You may even dislike it intensely. That's OK with us.

You can hate our rules as much as you want, but you are required to abide by them while you are here.

Though you seemed unaware of them until now, you were shown them, and you agreed to them, when you joined this forum in April.

Since the .avi files you have obtained were commercial, I recommend taking your questions to the company you acquired them from.

Very well said jggimi!
