well there is absolutly no way to say just 1, at least for me. so i will mention just a few. :)

Berserk - very violent but also a very good story if you stick with it.

Golden Boy - yes its rather sexist but boy is it funny. :D

Witch Hunter Robin - takes a little time to build but still very good.

Scryed - excellent, only let down a tiny bit by the ending IMHO. if you know this series you will regonise my avatar.

Elfen Lied - again violent but engrossing series. hoping they follow it up.

and thats ignoring all the older classics such as ranma 1/2, tenchi, record of lodoss war, kimagure orange road, dna2, dirty pair etc etc etc etc :D :D :D

...except "ah my goddess - the movie" which annoyed the bollocks off me. the best work to come out of the goddess franchise is definitely the mini-goddess series.

i was going to post heaps on every little title, but realised how boring it was so i'll just list them in approximate order of preference:

i would add Magical shopping arcade Abenobashi to the list but i don't know where i'd place it - i've only ever seen it while hung over and crashed on a floor, so i'd need to watch it properly before i could make a real judgment. though i think Mune-mune is hella cute. and Arumi would be pretty nice if you give her a few footy seasons :D

Soulhunter - you put *hides* next to DB but nothing next to simpsons & futurama(i like futurama too) which are NOT anime but american cartoons ? please people stick to anime only.

Mug Funky - Love Hina is not bad but the dub is totally unwatchable. the WORST bloody accents and voice acting. watching with the original japanese audio and subs is the only way to enjoy watching this title. Evangelion is very good right up until the last episode, that sucks. thats why they also had to make a movie to end it properly, pity that ends just as unfulfillingly.

I think that anime these days is pretty poor compared to several years ago (Kenshin, Neon Genesis, Beserk, early Inuyasha, Hikaru no Go, etc). The animation quality overall has dropped, and stories are usually pretty poor - I call it the Cowboy Bebop syndrome, where writers write confusing stuff to mask the fact that the story is terrible. Anyway, I feel like a rambling old man preaching to the wind, so I'll stop here.

-Hajime no Ippo (the king)
-Hikaru no Go (very good serie)
-Full Metal Alchemist (this is very good series)

So good:
-Beck (about music bands)
-Bleach (the manga is so good so I expect the same for the anime :))

I like them but not that much :p:
-Genshinken (this is funny too)
-Elfen Lied (so violent but is ok)
-2x2 Shinobuden (a nonsense humor serie)
-Ebichu (yes, I like to see that hamster be smashed xD)

And yeah, in this preference order too except for the first and the second one, I don't really know which of them I like more :)

though, watching the Fruits Basket series so far, the subs are terrible! i think i'm going to have to watch it dubbed - the subs make no sense, seem to use far more words than necessary, have grammar worse than an instruction manual, and are downright unreadable if more than one person is talking - the sub at the top goes to the character in the background, meaning that by the time i know what's happening i don't have time to actually read it before the next one comes on! i wonder if it's worth re-authoring this one with better subs? usually i'm quick enough reading subs that i forget they're there. that's how they should be. grrrr. curses to FUNimation! CURSES!!!

Mug Funky - i dont have anything against dub in general i just really dont like the one to Love Hina. example - knowing they are mostly dubbing in America one expects there to be American accents, of course. however the f**kwit that decided that Kitsune should be dubbed with a very heavy southern belle accent should be strung up by the mivonks for a very long time. it is THE most annoying accent i have heard.

that said there are bad subs aswell as you say. you would think they would have that down pat by now but yes i have seen bad ones too, out of sync with when talking starts, subs that flash on and off so fast you dont get to read more than a word or 2 etc etc etc.

qwerpoi - well yes it is pretty full on but think back to the first episode and who he has travelling on him. :)
also of course the series is just the first couple of books of the manga(from memory) so the story goes way beyond that of course.

I agree with the dubbing in dodgy american accents, it's so bad...they do it for movies as well, as anyone who's ever seen Versus in english version can vouch for, it's enough to ruin the whole experience (and more). Hellsing was very very well done though (I think), so I enjoyed watching them in english, for the reasons mug funky states.

That's why i usually pick the "light" shows (comedy or the like stuff) for watching while eating ..that way i don't miss too much story when i have to concentrate on the fork for a moment =)

What I meant about Beserk is that its ending scarred me for life, it's not something that a lot of people can handle. It does help to know that the story continues further (there's even some rumors for a second season), but that show was so gory it aired at around midnight in Japan (and for anyone who watches a lot of anime, if it's violent by Japanese standards, it must be insane). Nevertheless, the first 20 or so episodes are not really that violent, and I recommend the anime to anyone who enjoys Record of Lodoss War or medieval stories. It is absolutely one of the finest anime I've ever seen. Just be prepared for that ending :)

isn't Ichi the Killer a live action movie? man... just watching the trailer nearly made me puke. i'm going to have to see it now, as horror/thrillers generally don't have an effect on me anymore, and i'd like to see something that messes me up.

Shin Hokuto No Ken is somewhat violent too. More than Berserk for sure. Not scary as Berserk's last episodes, but very violent imho. It is basically the same kind of fights than in Hokuto No Ken but since there is no censorship you can see brains and bodies disrupt and spread around.

hmm people being split in half (from head to toe) by a sword as big a a person not that violent ? ok compared to the ending maybe so but a touch more full on than Lodoss war(which i also briefly mentioned at the bottom of my first post aswell). :D

Fist Of The NorthStar(to give it its weatern name for those who dont know) is indeed violent aswell. i liked the movie but havent seen the series.

people who have never seen these anime may be wondering are we sick but they should understand these are not some violence for violence sake and no story animes.

I really don't care for it. I already gave my list of favorites, and ITK wouldn't be anywhere near the top.

I like quite a few more things than was on my list, but to list then all would take too long. Also, what I like best depends on my mood. Something like Azumanga Daioh is great for those times when you want something light and cheery, but intelligent. Cowboy Bebop is good when you are in the mood for stylish violence with a half-way decent plot and good music.

Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai is great when you feel the need for wackiness and appreciate a little cheesecake. If you need the wackiness sans cheesecake, substitute FLCL instead.

The Ranma anime is okay, but the manga is MUCH better. Even more true with Love Hina. There aren't many anime series that are as good as the manga. The best ones stick very close to the manga. Examples of those include Naruto and Monster.
