i got an amd athlon with 1464mhz
and the following file takes ~90% of that cpu just for the rv10 video decoding

metropolis, 2001 restauration, german dvd
res: 656x528
fps: 25
bitrate: 1506avg 4000max
grainy black&white

is that normal? because it seems a bit to cpu greedy for me

i use hfe 2.11 without sharpening (deactivating hfe only reduces the cpu usage very little)

i'd appreciate any input

if i remember the wmv9 sample in hd-dvd format from krosoft does the same to my celeron 2.4
and wmv9&rv10 are greedy codec...

1500abr and 4000max is a high bitrate...if i remember right some people can have pb with xvid@1500 if the cpu is not enough powerfull...and xvid don't need as much cpu as rv10 do no?

I have a 1533mHz i.e. 1800+ and 80-90% cpu usage for such a high quality video is to be expected.

seems a little high, but I don't have much experience with AMD processors. On my P4 3.2 GHz, similar sized videos is about 15% to decode, while 1280x720 is 60-70%.

As a rule of thumb we generally say you need a P3 800 MHz to decode 640x480 at 24 fps, but that's at 100%. RV9/RV10 is more complex to decode than MPEG-4, how much depends on the implementation.
