I have service pack 2 and media player 10

Yet when i try to play a dvd on my opotorite dvd player, both nero showtime and wmp split the screen 3 times I've spent hours tring to resolve the problem but nothing works. I thought it was because i didn't have the right codec or maybe codecs are corrupt. please help

vcds and and stored videos play fine.

something else, this cheap burner doesn't seem to work with regular CDs either.

i got some good tips there for my pioneer 108.

one thing to check first is if you have an 80 wire cable connecting the DVD burner to the mobo. if you have a regular 40 wire one, try changing it and seeing what happens. i found with mine it didn't make a difference as far as reading/writing certain discs (it turns out that my drive is finicky and my discs are shit), but it helped with compatibility with the rest of my machine.
