hello

just starting to look into how to get my dv camcorder footage onto dvd. i tried a while ago but got bogged down with all the different programs needed (tmpgenc, ifoedit etc), and then stuff like interlacing or deinterlacing just made my head explode.
so the question is........i see you can buy camcorders that record straight to dvd? well how do they do that if i need all these programs and settings to do mine?

or have things advanced so much i can do that too now on my pc? without going from 1 program to another.

i had a go a while ago but found the footage a bit blocky when i played it on tv. thats when i got bogged down with deinterlacing. so just how do these camcorders do it straight away?

cheers

If you want a simple solution, you may want to look into buying a DVD Recorder.

Otherwise you will have to use a number of programs.

I have personnally used this combination:

1- Capture in mpeg-2 with a box called ADS Instant DVD Xpress (a USB hardware Mpeg encoder)
2- Edit the mpeg-2 file with a program called Videoredo
3- Author and burn DVD with Ulead DVD Movie Factory (this program comes with the ADS DVD Instant DVD Xpress box).

I have also used this combination:

1- Capture your DV with a program called WinDV (you need a firewire port and cable to capture DV)
2- Edit your DV with Vdub experimental 1.6.1
3- Convert using TMPGEnc.
4- Author and burn with a program called Ulead DVD Movie Factory 3.0

The first combination is very quick. The second one gives better results but is time consuming.

There are a number of single application tools that can do this -- capture DV to disk, provide non linear editing tools, encode, and author with simple menu controls.

You may find the products designed for the consumer market both usable and affordable. For one example, Ulead VideoStudio can do all of this, and the application is available for USD 99.95. A 30-day trial can be downloaded from the company's website. www.ulead.com

so you mean ulead does the work of tmpgenc and ifoedit etc? just open it up, capture from camcorder using firewire, then edit and straight onto dvd? all from one place?

cheers

I agree, those 'straight to dvd' camera's do not do the best mpeg2 encoding, even the good cards for mpeg2 encoding are best ran at less than realtime for best encoding(I think).
