h.264 playable in WMP?

I was wondering if WMP is supposed to be able to play the new Nero Recode files (H.264 AVC profiles)?

I use SageTV and want to import all my movies into it and they will not play uunless WMP is able to play them. If not, is there another encoder that will give me the same quality/bitrate as this that WMP can play?

i don't know what fourCC code nerodigital uses, but assuming it's a standard compliant one, ffdshow will be able to decode the video part.

i'm not sure about splitters and stuff. perhaps you'd need to change filter merits and things to see if the ND filters can be made to work outside of it's native player. AFAIK nerodigital is directshow based, so it's using the same framework as WMP and presumably SageTV.

oh, wait. ffdshow's h.264 decoder may not be good with b-frames yet... IIRC it's being developed in parallel with the x264 encoder, so it may be buggy with b-frames. but if nero's filters can be made to work outside of nero you should be able to use them for decoding.

with the recode installed wmp and other direct show based media players playback my nero h264 encodes fine,...

ffdshow will be able to decode the video part.

If I try to decode nero digital with ffdshow I only get a black screen!

The H264 decoder in ffdshow is incomplete, and hence, cannot decode NeroDigital AVC.

Nero-AVC movies play on MPC but only with nero video filters = only with nero installed!
I hope a nero playback-only filter package will be soon available!:rolleyes:

to my knowledge you can connect ffdshow to the nero .mp4 splitter and the moonlight .mp4 splitter (both able to handle avc-in-mp4 files, as produced by nero and other tools)

so to say you can also play avc-in-mp4 files without installing nero's stuff, but by installing the moonlight filters (with ffdshow or without it, as you want). moonlight also offers an own avc decoder usable with its splitter

ffdshow cant handle avc b-frames yet, so you should be able to decode nero avc streams with it if they dont use b-frames

I have Showtome installed and still all I get is blank video, the audio works fine though...?

make sure you have the latest version of showtime installed. try playing the video in showtime and report whether this works

Yes it plays fine in ShowTime.

Maybe I should try uninstall/reinstall when I get home...

i hope ahead doesnt limit the h.264 decoding to its player somehow. would be evil

the un-reinstall did the trick. It plays fine in WMP now. I figured this out the hard way. I tried it on my other system after installing Nero and it worked, so I knew something had to be wrong with my main HTPC. so I did a full reinstall of XP and then it was fine.
However I am still having a problem getting it to work in SageTV. Does anybody out there use Sage or BTV and able to play Nero AVC files?
