View Full Version : Compressability Check - Settings?

I'm trying to start with xvid, when I've been using DivX for the most part.

I'm having problems with the Compressability check. What Encoding Mode should I use?

Also, since the 2 tutorials seem to have different options than I see in XVid.. Should my 2nd pass be 2nd Pass INT or 2nd Pass EXT?

Thanks

hi and welcome to the forum,

do i understand you correctly, that you do not use gknot (or any other tool) to do the comp test for you?

if so, iirc, the only important setting for the compressability test is that you set it to One-pass quality based at quant 2

all the other settings (bframes, qpel, gmc, custom quant matrix) should be the same as in your final encode.

hope this was what you were looking for,

First of all you should get rid of that ancient build and get one of the latest versions as those options have long been removed from XviD.

Thanks

I am using Gordian Knot to do the compression check, but it seems to default to CBR for some reason whenever I try to run a compressability check using Xvid instead of DivX. Thats what I see when i goto the options. I get some insane low quality amount (like 0.018) and even if i allow it to encode at 100% of that rate, the movie turns out like junk (as I'd expect from such a low bitrate.) I've tried the new beta of GK, and also the older 0.28.7 that I was previously using. I'd prefer not to just blindly guess a bitrate without running a check.

By the way, I'm using XviD-1.0.2-29082004. I'll go grab a newer one if available.

I'm not totally new to encoding, and have done most of my collection as DivX, but I'm just having problems getting Gordian Knot to work with XVid.

well this seems to me like a conflict with older codecs! maybe you didn't fully uninstall an older version of xvid. my suggestions would be to uninstall/remove as many codecs as possible and then only reinstall those you really need!

No, I figured you were using an older build then that since you mentioned the 2nd pass INT and EXT which has been gone for quite some time from XviD. That shouldn't be coming up with that version you mentioned you had installed, and if it does you need to make sure you've uninstalled all versions of XviD and reinstall the latest version.

I took the advice and removed -all- traces of XviD from my system, including the registry. I also did the same for Gordian Knot just in case. I reinstalled the latest build of XviD, and the latest beta of Gordian Knot (I like the job-save feature).. and now the compressability check gives me the options I'm being told to look for. I guess it was looking at an old ancient encoder somewhere, although I'm unsure of where it came from.

Thanks for the help :)

Good to hear. :)
