Jerky Playback Using Getting The Best From CCE Guide

I have been using Getting The Best From CCE for backing up two movies onto one dvd, with DVD Lab as the authoring program.
I do not use the guide exactly, the one thing i do differently, is set it up from the beginning for a two pass VBR (instead of first a one pass VBR to edit the bitrate on the movie for the second pass).

Until a couple of months ago this method was working well, but for the past couple of months i have been getting a lot of jerky playback on the dvds and now sometimes they are freezing.
I have reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled windows xp pro, but after downloading everything again and starting from scratch, my backups still have jerky playback and freezing.

Shrek 1 & 2 burned onto my harddrive using Shrink, but full size, no shrinking, as DVD Decryptor and Smart Ripper have not been working right either, but Shrink has.

I have CCE Basic (Version 2.69.1.10) and normal settings are:

Average Bitrate between 2000 TO 3000 to get a finished filesize of 1,900,000

Progreesive Source (Unticked for Interlaced video)
Offset Line - 0

This is the script i have been using, it is one Steve (Killing Spree) helped write for me, but i left out resizing as the picture size is fine without resizing:

Is something up with my PC, or are am i using the wrong settings somewhere ?
I have been at this for weeks and used different settings in CCE to see how i got on, but to date i have over twenty coasters!

hmm... kinda sounds like an interlacing problem to me, but since i'm absolutely no CCE expert and not really familiar with the "getting the best out of CCE" method either, i'm gonna move ya over to the CCE forum, where this post should recieve a little more qualified attention ;)

If it is an interlacing problem, would it cause problems for dvd decryptor in file mode.

Smart ripper kept missing a vob at the beginning of the film and dvd decryptor was having trouble seperating the begining of the film from the last trailor.

Strange stuff, that is why i use shrink without compressing the video for burning to my hard drive.

I am going to try the decomb dll and use fielddeinterlace() in my script to see what happens.

Freezing might be due to bad media. What discs do you use?

I use TDK DVD+R, but have tried a couple of Maxwell DVD-R as well and still have the same problem.

Is playback jerky on your PC or just on the standalone?

What movie is in question, is it really interlaced? You should only trust your eyes on the matter;)

The movie is not jerky on playback on my pc with nero media player, but that is a rip from shrink, uncompressed.

The two movies i am cureently working on are Shrek 1 and Shrek 2.

Have you tried using DVD Rebuilder or DVD2SVCD?

I havn't tried DVD to SVCD, i will need to look into that.
I have tried DVD Rebuilder, though i couldn't work out how to set it up for the file sizes i want, ie two movies onto one DVD (movie only, the file size for each movie roughly works out about 1,900,000 Kb in CCE and then i add the audio after using Besweet).

I have been trying different settings the past couple of days with CCE, but to no avail, current encodes have offset line set to 1.

How do you check an mpv before burning it.

I think the offset line should be 0 unless your source is interlaced and bottom field first.

I don't know if Shrek 1 and 2 are interlaced, but I would suspect that they are not. Open a VOB file in VirtualDubMod and see if there is any combing in scenes with motion.

Some suggestions:

1) Try another authoring program, DVDLab has sometimes caused problems
2) Use a higher minimum bitrate

Boulder there is a combing in the fast motion scenes in Shrek 1.
What would you set CCE to for this type of movie.

What other authoring program would you recommend ?

Is there any setting in DVD Rebuilder to encode the movie to half its full size ?

Can DVD2SVCD make movies DVD compliant, from what i was reading earlier in its FAQ, all the talk was about CDs, i couldn't see anything about the film ending up on a DVD ?

If there is combing, you'd better encode as interlaced; alternate scan, progressive frame flag unchecked, leave the offset at 0.

But first, try this script:

Note that you'll need the latest Decomb package. You can find it at http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises . Extract decomb.dll to a folder of your choice and edit the path in the script accordingly.

Open the script in VDub and check the video. Is it jerky?

DVD2SVCD can do DVDs as well, you'll just have to select DVD as the output format.

I'd give TMPGEnc DVD Author a go, or the free DVD Author + GUI.

If that script works (i.e. no combing and motion is smooth), you can use your original script. Just put the Telecide line right after the MPEG2Source line, encode as you would encode a progressive source.

If it doesn't work, your best bet is to encode as interlaced (without the Telecide line).

Boulder is Decomb, this: Decomb Plugin for Avisynth(Version 5.2.1).

Ikeep getting a 404.shtml when i try to download the decomb package for AVISynth 2.5.
I already had the above Decomb file, but i will check through the filters readme that comes with avisynth.

Shrek with telecide(order=1) looks fine in VirtualDubMod.

Have downloaded TMPGEen DVD Author and will give it a try.
Have you tried there AC3 encoder, just wondering if it was any good.

I haven't tried the encoder but I suppose it can't be horrible, otherwise I would have probably heard nasty comments about it. Just use a decent bitrate (192kbps for 2.0 audio) and the results should be good.

But you can use the original AC3 track as well;)
