View Full Version : AVI to svcd problem with frame rate

I'm trying to convert a 29.97 avi to svcd but continue to get a jumpy video. Happened in the past but just blew it off after doing numerous searches trying to get a fix. I'm thinking that either my video is being encoded in cce as 30fps (non drop frame) or an issue with pulldown being performed when it shouldn't. The deinterlace is set to "no deinterlace". Also, Should I use a template setting under the matrix tab? If so which? And, should I uncheck certain boxes in the CCE advanced tab? (progressive and zigzag because source is interlaced 29.97). I just can't seem to get this straight on my own! Any help PLEASE...

Is the source truly interlaced or just telecined? In the first case, encode as interlaced and the latter, choose IVTC.

It is worth noting that there are two different settings in the Deinterlace dropdown

"No Deinterlacing" does not deinterlace the frame but encodes the output as progressive.

"Keep interlaced" encodes interlaced source for interlaced output, ie corrects the CCE advanced settings for you.

Thanks for your help.

When I load the video in VirtualDub and look up file info I get the source as being 29.97 but there is no info about interlacing. When I scroll through the video in Dub, I do not see the telltale signs of interlacing (the horizontal lines on quick motion). So still a bit confused because I thought progressive was film (23fps). Not sure what my MPEG video fps was after process, but powerDVD called it 30fps (tend to think it reads this even on 29.97 if I recall). Also another note, how can I be assured that the correct fps in cce is dialed in? There are I think 5 different choices from 23.97 to 29.97 and even 30.

Your AVI file is deinterlaced, which means you're screwed. I don't know if a progressive 29.97fps will play correctly on a standalone.

Hmmm... is 29.97 progressive common for an avi file?? Because I've had quite a few other titles do the same after processing (become jerky). So it sounds like I'm out of luck for getting these converted smoothly...

Either someone has been stupid and deinterlaced a telecined stream instead of IVTC'ing or the original has been truly interlaced 29.97fps stream which has been deinterlaced for MPEG-4 encoding.

I don't know if MPEG-1 supports progressive 29.97fps streams, it might be worth trying.

This may not be related to your source framerate. Progressive 29.97 AVI's are not terribly common I wouldn't have thought. I'm thinking perhaps the tip for jerky video in the AVI2*** sticky might help.
