View Full Version : Distortion when capturing

I am trying to back up some home movies on DVD. Everything is working fine except for one small issue.

The bottom few lines are getting distorted, sort of like the lines you see when fast forwarding a tape. That's the best way I can think of to describe it. The amount of distortion seems to vary by tape.

I tried replacing cables and using different capture programs but the distortion persists.

I am using a conexant PCI capture card and winDVR 3, capturing directly to MPEG2. I am using the composite input on the card.

I have been cropping the distortion out, however that is adding time and extra processing to this project. Any suggestions as to where this is coming from or how I can prevent it?

Sounds like overscan to me - this is inherent in all analog tape playback systems. These are not visible when view on a TV. You can crop that out if your destination is a PC.

It's tape head switching noise, and ways to manage it are described in Section 7 of the Capture Guide (http://www.doom9.org/capture/start.html).
