How to increase brightness when playing AVI or MPGS ?

Both PowerDVD6 and WinDVD6 have controls to increase brightness when playing AVIs or MPGs. But they do not work for some reason for any AVI/MPG file where there IS any information (frame rate, codec etc) given when you select the Summary tab for the AVI/MPG file Properties in Explorer.

I have tried changing from an NVIDIA to a RADEON graphics card but still the same problem. I have seen the same problem on a W2K PC and an XP PC.

Unfortunately most of my AVI/MPG files have this information in the Summary Tab. Many of my AVI/MPGs are too dark and brightness controls would help a lot.

Any ideas ? Thanks.

Why using WinDVD or PowerDVD when there much better players for media like AVI/mpeg... out.

Try one of these players:
Zoomplayer/MPC/TCMP/BSPlayer

Everone of them is capable of changing brightness/colour/contrast

OK thanks. The one thing about PowerDVD is that it can do various intelligent automatic adjustments (brightness, color & contrast etc) based on the video as it is being played. You can also create your own adjustment profiles. This saves messing around manually with each video each of which may need adjusting uniquely. Can anything else do this apart from PowerDVD ?

It seems to be too intelligent :D , if you can't change brightness,... manually.

Generally, the features in WinDVD & PowerDVD are not really much.

Are your videos so different in brightness, so that you really need this special feature?

Never needed such a feature for brightness.

That kind of automatic functionality is really a feature of the DECODER, and not the player.

Use ffdshow for mpeg4 content (I think it also handles mpeg1/2). Go to the codec's configuration screen, and on the 'Postprocessing" tab, near the bottom under "Level Fix" enable the "Luminance" and "Full Luma Range" tick boxes. This turns on auto histogram functions that rebalance the brightness frame by frame during decode.

That should do what you want.
