i noticed that if i choose auto width the final width resolution of the divx movie is 720*..
in gknot where the w-modul must be 32 the width resolution can never be 720 but 704,736 etc unless the modul is changed
so how is this difference explained?

You can change the w-res in GKnot. It's just that some video cards have a problem playing back videos that aren't mod-32 width, and to be on the safe side GKnot uses mod-32 as default.
You should never go below mod-16 though as the efficiency of the encoding decreases quite a lot (The encoder will add back bars to ensure mod-16 and then encode everything with a note to not show the black bars...)

AutoGK does not indeed use mod32, but just mod16. I have not seen anyone complain yet, so I guess hardware is moving forward faster than software :)
