A forum search for your error message should have found this easily enough. It's been reported often enough.
You are converting AVI to DVD with "Do not convert audio" checked in the Audio tab.
If your AVI has DVD-compliant audio (eg an AC3 stream) it allows you to retain it in the DVD. The downside is that if your AVI has non-compliant audio (eg MP3) the process is doomed to failure.

I definitely have "Do not convert Audio" unchecked (the radio button is empty) but I get the exact same response as anth6000. My log file is exactly the same as his. Really would like to find an answer to this.
I had someone suggest that it could be my drive isn't NTFS and thus the resultant muxed .mpg file would be too large for FAT32 and thus mplex and/or spmux won't produce it. True? or Not True?
Nick
12th February 2005, 19:27
Feasible.
I would expect your mplex log to show this up.
Open it and/or post it here.
Another reasonable test would be to drop the disc size to, say, 3800 so it was within FAT32 limits and see if the problem goes away.

It acts like it can't find DVDAuthor & in the DVDAuthor notes it tells me unknown error. Someone else is having this same problem too on another thread. I am giving up on avi2dvd for now there has to be a bug in this latest version hopefully it will be fixed in the next version. whftherb: Your hard drive is most likely NTFS, but to make sure you can right click on your drive, hit format but dont actually format it & it will tell you if it is NTFS well if you are using windows that is. As far is it being an audio problem as some have suggested that is not the case I to have had no problems with prior builds making AVI's 2 SVCD's only now am I having problems when I try to make a AVI 2 DVD as others are having the same problem.
Nick

@anth6000 or whftherb
The reason DVD Author fails with this error is that MPlex failed to multiplex the file. Your Mplex log should say why. Please could you post it?

Here it is - all two lines of it. Not much I can tell from it. I've also cut-pasted "Encoded_audio_1.log since that seems to also be involved according to the line in mplex.log...

And the file "Encoded_audio_1.mp2" is 0 bytes long. So something's not getting completed - in BeSweet perhaps - which then impacts processing further down the line???
And, I did re-do the entire project (which is why it took so long to reply today) and stuck in a CD size of 3800 in the "Bitrate" tab per the instructions from a previous poster. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried two changes at once...
Anxiously awating some analysis of this latest run...
Nick
13th February 2005, 23:30
You're definitely right.
BeSweet isn't transcoding the audio.
Does the extracted audio file play?
Something to try would be to use VDubMod to save the audio from the AVI as a wav file, overwriting the file
D:\Working\Encoded_audio_1.mp2.wav
in your project folder.
Then copy the BeSweet commandline from your log, i.e.
D:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\BeSweet\BeSweet.exe -core( -input D:\Working\Encoded_audio_1.mp2.wav -output D:\Working\Encoded_audio_1.mp2 -logfile D:\Working\Encoded_audio_1.log ) -ota( -g max ) -shibatch( --rate 48000 ) -2lame( -e -b 192 -m s )
into a text file in Notepad, and save this as whatever.bat
Double click the .bat file thus created and BeSweet should run again. If you get working output from this manual run, you should be able to crash-recover from the multiplexing stage.

I have completely removed DVD2svcd from my PC reinstalled it & still the same problem you are having. I went back and downloaded dvd2svcd from the website again still the same problem. I have talked to some others having the same problem on another thread & this version has a bug in it. Maybe you can fix it manually, but I don’t think I am adept enough to try.

anth6000 - I did the same as well. Same results - as well.
I'm thinking now that maybe CCE is at fault because here's what my latest log shows:
From "mplex_log.txt":

**ERROR: [???] File unrecogniseable!

Here's what "DVD_Author_log.txt" says:
DVDAuthor::dvdauthor, version 0.6.10.

STAT: Processing D:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Movie\MPlex_Muxed_File00.mpg...
ERR: Error opening D:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Movie\MPlex_Muxed_File00.mpg: No such file or directory
Note: There is a file created entitled: Encoded_Video_CCE_NTSC.mpv and it is 3,422,082 KB wide - it's huge. Although it's icon shows it's associated with MS MediaPlayer 9, it will not play. It loads in without error but there's no sign of life afterwards. I don't know what else I can use to test-play it. It does not appear that BeSweet crashed as it did before - at least not that I can see in the logs or on the screen. There was no VTS creation.
So, I figure it's got to be something in CCE based on this latest output. But again, I'm completely unsure.
Hope Nick or someone can come in here and help us with more problem solving. Apparently it's not confined to one or two systems out here...
Thanks to all who are contributing.

@anth6000
Cross-posting is not recommended, becouse I was wathching the other thread, that you started, to find out more about your problem. I already told you, that the problem is in the audio extraction. Does the Extracted_audio_1.mpa play? I think not. You should try.
@whftherb
Could you try to play Extracted_audio_1.mpa and the Encoded_audio_1.mp2.wav files? If they don't play well, the problem is in the audio extraction process, or the source is corrupted.
whftherb
14th February 2005, 14:06
Hello Mango:
Yes, both Extracted_audio_1.mpa & Encoded_audio_1.mpa.wav (not mp2.wav - it's not there) play in Windows' Media Player 9 Series... perfectly I might add. I sampled both streams at several points along the way; they're perfect as far as I can tell.
I just had this sinking feeling... I went over to the DVDAuthor site on SourceForge and browsed around there for while. It's all Linux over there! DVDAuthor - is it for Linux only??? Gee I hope not 'cause I'll be real embarrassed!
Waiting to hear... Oh, and thank you too...

This means, you are running the project, with audio conversion disabled. Othervise you must have a file called 'Encoded_audio_1.mp2.wav' instead of 'Encoded_audio_1.mpa.wav'.
Did you completly rerun the project after Nick advised to enable audio conversion? If not, I'm sure that is the problem.
Anyway, I think you should delete the whole project directory, and start the project from the beginning. Do not forget to uncheck the 'Do not convert audio' checkbox.
If the project fails again, post the logfile, in your next message.
cheers

PS: DVDAuthor is for windows.

Mango: I posted here because I noticed others where having the same identical problem. There is obviously a bug in this latest version. I am not an expert with this program & that is why I use dvd2svcd for it’s simplicity; but I have made at least a dozen avi2svcd’s in the past using this program with older version w/no probs.

@anth6000
The way of detecting bugs, if someone finds one, is posting it here (Thank you for that), and we here, try to find out the source of the problem and report it to the author. But we just cannot say 'Hey, there is a bug!'. We need to detect it first, to know, where does it come from and what to modify in the code. I hope you understand. With posting here, you have the chance that we find out what you are doing wrong, or - if a real bug appears - we will take the connect with the author in order to correct it.
I'm using the current version for months without any errors, and could not find any bugs. I have run plenty of avi2dvd projects coming out perfectly. At least 30 with the current version.
An other thing: the log is created to provide all the information, that is needed to fing out, what is going wrong. Posting it, is the best thing you can do!
So now, I would like to ask you to run the project again, from the beggining. Please uncheck the 'Do not convert audio' checkbox. And finally post the log here. The rest is our job.

Mango...
Nick first said to someone else:
You are converting AVI to DVD with "Do not convert audio" checked in the Audio tab.
In my followup response post I pointed out that:
I definitely have "Do not convert Audio" unchecked (the radio button is empty) but I get the exact same response as anth6000. My log file is exactly the same as his. Really would like to find an answer to this.
And now you've said:
Did you completly rerun the project after Nick advised to enable audio conversion? If not, I'm sure that is the problem.
So, let's start fresh -> here's what I'll going to do. Delete everything from the working directory, start with a new .AVI, uncheck the Do Not convert Audio tik (which I do have unchecked at present because I'm looking at it) and let this project run overnight once more. You'll hopefully find something useful to comment on from that log file. I'll also kill all other apps so that it has sole control over the PC. (Glad DVD2SVCD -is- indeed a windows program - whew!).
Alright, back to it...

From looking at your besweet encoded audio log, why is your source audio only 24khz?

Are you sure that madplay is converting avi audio to wave correctly?
Avi files usually have 44.1khz and 48khz audio.
Maybe shibatch is having problem converting 24khz to 48khz.
Just a thought...

I have set dvd2svcd/AVI2DVD to encode the audio & that is not the problem. The problem is with DVD Author, so I have checked "dont make image" I then take the muxed mpeg file and reauthor it in TMPGENC author and everything is fine; however my source material is 16 x 9 downconverted 480i from my echostar DVR. Only problem is when I select anamorphic in the aspect ratio tab on dvd2svcd/AVI2DVD the final result always has black borders on the sides? Is it possible the DVR unit is changing the 16 x 9 to 4 x 3 letterbox? I am capturing avi 640 x 480 Huffyuv codec. Should I be capturing in 720 x 480 & should I slelect leave interlaced or no deinterlacing? I noticed some stair stepping between some scene with leave interlaced.
Nick
17th February 2005, 21:12
The problem you have is that the current build is set up for 1:1 PAR AVI's (ie square pixel). Since 640:480 is a multiple of 4:3, it assumes 4:3 input.
Therefore if you select 16:9 output, it creates a 4:3 frame in the middle of the output. This works well for some types of AVI's but not captures.
Either go back to build 2 or open avisynth.ini from your installation folder in Notepad. Alter your Lanczos (for example) resizer script so that the resize line reads
LanczosResize(^BorderLeft+^BorderRight+^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight)
This should do the trick.

I have tried to go back to another build, but only the latest is available, but if you can point me in the right direction that would be great too for build 2. What if I captured in 720 x 480? I haven't messed with the setting in avisynth & frankly I don't have an understanding of it; but If I can't get build two I will follow your adjustment verbatim.
Thank You,

I was able to go back to 1.1.2 Build 1 but that is to old & doesnt offer dvd output support. http://www.dvd2dvd.org/oldversions.htm is the only older versions that are offered if anyway can send me 1.2.2 B2 I would appreciate it.
