View Full Version : 2 DVDs -> 1 DL ?

I've been backing up DVDs by splitting the main movie using DVDShrink and copying each half to one DVD+R (unless the whole thing will fit on one disk). Probably a stupid question, but will I have any issues combining the two halves to one DVD-DL? I might want to do this once DL prices come down.

I noticed that your question has been ignored so I thought I'd reply. Besides, it feels good that I (status:Junior) can offer advice to you (status:Senior).
I've never reunited two parts of an artificially split DVD in the way you describe, but I have combined both parts of LOTR SEE onto a single movie-only disc. In effect, I think we're talking about the same thing: combining two separate titles onto one disc.
It's possible to add both titles to one disk using DvdShrink but the problem is that you still get two individual titles on the disc. This prevents intuitive chapter navigation and introduces a pause while the player switched titles.
The solution I used (one of many I think) involved using VobEdit to merge the two titles into one title then using IfoEdit to recreate the IFO files and to correct the audio/subtitle descriptions and subtitle colour.
After setting DvdShrink to 8.5Gb, open the new files and burn with DvdDecrypter.
Of course, you might prefer to use different software but the object of the exercise is same and, once aware of the issues, you can adapt the solution to suit.
Hope this is helpful.
PS How can I change my status from "Junior"? I don't profess to be an expert but, at 53 years of age, it feels mildly insulting to be called a junior. Novice or a Neophyte would be better.

Yo mick - "Junior" refers to your status given the number of postings. It upgrades automatically; eventually you can put your own custom description in.
Also, look at Chetwood's post in your thread. LMAO.

I think I'll try that!

Tried it!
DvdRemake still produces two separate titles on the DVD, just like DvdShrink. That means that the VobEdit/IfoEdit method is the preferred option, except for the obvious alternative.
If your original DVD is still readable, why not abandon your two-disc backup and do a fresh one to DL from the original DVD with DvdShrink? You just need to set DvdShrink to DVD-9 in the Preferences section. No hassle. No fuss. Nothing new to learn. Job done.

You can use Nero Recode (if you have it) to merge titles and IfoEdit to Create Ifos around the merged title.
This will give perfect chapter navigation, no trouble, and should set the time flags so they are all seamless entries, so the "little pause" is eliminated.
After that, yes, make it into an ISO and burn with DVD decrypter. Shrink can do this job.
Regards and good luck.

The VobEdit/IfoEdit method achieves the same end, but with freeware.
Hello blutach. You've been quiet. Been on the Fosters?

yeah, freeware is fine, but time isnt free. if yiou want join it right the first time, in less than 90 min. use dvd2one. the cost of the program is nothing compared to its ease of use and quality. thats why you never see any problems being posted here for dvd2one or dvd95copy,there are no problems. even thier own forums are quiet.
in my opinion, this forum should be called the"dvd shrink"forum.

I think Dimad probably linked to the wrong guide or just didn't read the initial post correctly :)
http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/ht_merge1.php is a guide that merges your movie split back together I think but I've never tried it

Welcome to the forums :)
LMAO, someone else like me who values their time :D. I also agree as sometimes the free methods take longer but it's up to the individual at the end of the day. I now value even just a weekend's free time more than most DVD program's whereas before I had plenty of leisure time
I don't think it's as bad as what you say though here. It's just people like to offer free solutions here and it's very welcomed by most people :). I should know as I would spend ages using Ifoedit finding new free methods to do things and enjoyed helping others. Uf you already don't know 2COOL is a pure genius at this as are quite a few members here. Other Doom9 members fully appreciate that you can do almost anything for free thanks to these people ;)
as for the 'DVDShrink' forum, it is probably used by at least 1,000 times more people than DVD95Copy & DVD2One put together if not more. Take the amount of people having issues to the amount using it then I would be bold enough to say percentage wise overall, people have less issues with DVDShrink :)
that's probably why you never see DVD95Copy/DVD2One issues here as they seem to be a rare breed these days. Most users also use the official forums as they know they will get a better response :)
exactly the same can be said for Nero burning ROM (not the best example ;)). You always see plenty moaning about it but it's a small percentage compared to the amount of users actually using it :)
I hope you get the idea ;)

Hi MackemX
yeah, its funny,it used to take me a day or two to backup a dvd with any kind of quality. i just saw a post where someone was complaining it was taking 2.5 hrs. to backup a movie. that used to be a dream. and then to go through the process of joining with ifoedit, ouch.
I dont mean to say its "bad" here,I think its great that people are helping each other, including you,I cant remember a time when i didnt see you in the forums.
I guess I could have phrased that better, perhaps I should say that I feel that dvdshrink deserves its own dedicated section, like dvdrb. After all,it is freeware. a lot of people are going to use just based on that. the sheer number of dvdshrink posts should justify it. But it really doesnt matter anyway,dvd95copy and dvd2one both have thier own forums. anyone who posts a question about either of those programs here probably has a cracked copy and cant post on thier official forum.
I dont agree with you that the number of people posting problems about dvdshrink indicate that many more people use it,but i cant prove it. and i dont suppose that digi or rene are likley to divulge how many copies of thier programs they have sold. my guess is that they are both well off now though. What I do know however is that 99% of the problems I see people posting about dvd shrink are not problems with dvd95copy or dvd2one. also i would guess that if dvd2one and dvd95copy were free, very few people would use dvdshrink. keep in mind that that is only my "OPINION",based on my expierience with all of the so called one click programs. like you said, its up to the individual.
I must stress that I AM NOT KNOCKING DVDSHRINK AT ALL. its an awesome program. I use it myself on the rare occasion that dvd2one and 95copy choke. I just feel that in all the dvdshrink posts,dvd2one and 95copy's unique capabilities have become forgotten. like when people make a post about joining a two sided or combineing two titles on one disc,no one seems aware of dvd2ones ability to join two titles with ease. the irony is that this forum was started for those two programs.
