Perhaps I should know this and am brain dead today, but can anyone explain the easiest way to turn a BMP into a tiny VOB?

Top of my head...
1. Use TMPGenc to convert BMP to a m2v and later author/remux with IfoEdit.
2.
This way is much quicker. ;)
Create a single blank VOB with BlankVOB (http://www.posunplugged.com/jsoto/dvdtools.htm).
Create new IFOs with IfoEdit (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/createifo.html).
Use DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html)'s still image function to remux.
Don't forget to set your still time to 255 if you want to preview it later. I prefer this instead since it's free and unlimited as opposed to TMPGenc 30 day trial period with MPEG2 codec. ;)
Note: ensure that you are using the appropriate resolution in BlankVOB. Don't know if you have a horizontal or vertical shot of your photo. You may have to trial and error but DVD Shrink adjusts nicely to image off-sized resolutions.

With Blackness() you can control the numer of frames, and in CCE (or the encoder you use) you can control the bitrate (quality) of the resulting MPEG.

i used to use the TMPGenc method(8000 bitrate 2passVBR) but i found that DVD Shrink does a better job at converting pics to MPEG2.
never tried the dvd2svcd bmp loader, have to give it a shot.
i just love my jacket pictures :cool:

sweetness, I didn't know you could do that with shink! Can you briefly outline the procedure? Does the re-authoring mode allow that? I always though that shrink could only transcode and I was under the impression that converting a pic to an MPEG2 required some amount of encoding (for the video part).

I like to use dvdauthorgui to make stills if i want a jacket picture or a custom menu. It uses jpeg2yuv and mpeg2enc. Its one of the quickest methods that I've found. See it (http://www.videohelp.com/~liquid217/dvdauthorgui.pl?p=guide1#menus).
I'll have to check shrink's method too. I didn't know it did that either!

When you have a blank VOB with the IFOs stored somewhere on HDD, it's a piece of cake to convert a BMP to VOB! Good idea!

well, it doesn't make a m2v file, it makes a vob that can be demuxed and resized.
just open any dvd and in re-author mode (shrink converts the pic to the resolution of the title)drag your tile and then with start/end move the end slider to to the beginning. you will get something like 15 frames. then compression setting is set to still image.
demux and resize for jacket picture.

You may also use the 2COOL method: just open a dummy DVD with only one VTS with one blank frame. Then, replace the black frame by your still image. Use the Still Image compression setting.

I know you corrected yourself but to clarify to others, you used re-author mode and set end sector. While I used Full disc backup only. Anyways, no personal offense from me. :)
BTW 2cool. is that http://img106.exs.cx/img106/4568/v3icon.gif a bug?? Not a real one but one of my main superheroes I grew up with during my childhood. That's V3.

you know i still can't get shrink to still compress a dummy(blank) DVD. it just jumps back to automatic. anyone else have this happen? or know how to fix this?
oh about the jacket picture for the large J00___5L.MP2(or J00___6L.MP2) you don't need to resize but for the other two you would have too. but who has a tv that shows the other two anyways?

DVDShrink cannot compress a single frame, because it's a keyframe. That's normal.
However, you can replace it with another picture (BMP, JPG or PNG) if you select the Still Image compression. This works in Full Disc and Reauthor modes.

it works now. and i found the problem too. if you create the ifo with ifoedit .971 it works. but if you use .96 to create the ifo dvd shrink will not allow you to select still image, it jumps to automatic. try it.

Sorry to jump in again, but supposing I had a BMP (say it was copied with PgcEdit) and I wanted to overwrite the image with some text. Now the image isn't perfect because of the anamorphic representation and any text I overwrite on it will be distorted when played back.
And ideas on how to overcome this?

Edit a 4:3 or 16:9 image, then resize it to DVD. It will be distorted before encode, but the AR flags will sort it out on playback. I found this table a while ago:

I'm glad you did, the numbers that I posted for NTSC aren't quite right.
For 4:3:
1.5 (720:480) is taller than 1.3333 (4:3), so the height to edit with square pixes would be:
480*(720/480)/(4/3) = 480 * 1.5 / 1.333 = 540
For 16:9:
1.5 (720:480) is shorter than 1.77777 (16:9), so the width to edit with square pixes would be:
720*(480/720)/(9/16) = 720* 1.333 / 1.5 = 853.333 ~= 854

In fact, if you are using square pixels, the formula is verry simple:
4:3 (resize height, for both PAL and NTSC)
Width = 720
Height = 720 / 4 * 3 = 540
4:3 (resize width, NTSC)
Width = 480 / 3 * 4 = 640
Height = 480
4:3 (resize width, PAL)
Width = 576 / 3 * 4 = 768
Height = 576
16:9 (resize height, PAL and NTSC)
Width = 720
Height = 720 / 16 * 9 = 405

Width = 480 / 9 * 16 = 853.333
Height = 480

Okay, so we know that we can create a still-image .vob file from a 720x480 .bmp or .jpg using DVD Shrink (or MuxMan). There has also been talk in this thread of creating jacket files.
Is a .vob file equivalent to a .m2v file? In other words, it can simply be renamed to .mp2 for the JACKET_P folder? If so, then this represents a nice, easy way to create the 720x480 J00___5L.MP2 file.
So the real question (for jackets) becomes: how do we now resize the .vob file to 176x112 for J00___5M.MP2 and resize to 96x64 for the J00___5S.MP2 file?

VOB files are multiplexed M2V with optional audio and subpics streams. An important difference is the presence of nav packs. Honestly, I have never paid attention to the JACKET_P format, as none of my players can display them. I don't know if you can use an unmodified VOB. But if you need the elementary video stream, you can easily demux it from the VOB.
AFAIK, it is not possible to resize a VOB, although DVD Rebuilder can convert any VTS_XX_X.VOB file (included in a DVD_Video, with the IFOs) to 1/4 res (360 x 240). But of course, you can theoretically easily create the elementary video stream with a good MPEG encoder.

The .m2v's I intend to create (for JACKET_P) would have no audio or subpicture streams, but from your description, I take it that the .vob would still differ from an .m2v because of the nav packs? So, if the elementary video stream was demuxed from the .vob, would that yield a standard .m2v? If so, what tool should be used to demux?
And now, having a standard .m2v, can it be resized? The JACKET_P simply requires standard .m2v files (but with specific filenames with an .MP2 extension). But it requires three such files of differing sizes; thus the need to resize. And what tool could be used to resize?

Use PgcDemux to extract the (yes, standard) M2V from the VOB.
You cannot resize the M2V or the VOB without reencoding it. It is probably preferable to start from a still image (BMP) and to encode it with a good MPEG encoder. Some of them are free, such as QuEnc. However, I'm not sure they can encode a still frame, and I don't know what parameters you should use.

TMPGEnc Plus 2.5, and HCEnc as well, can happily create MPEG stills (yes, Avisynth does accept 1-frame video streams :D ). The only possible problem is, even a "one 8 plus sixty-three 1s" matrix is not "good enough" for certains images, and in such cases an encoder "more flexible" is needed. If you ever happen to need a "sixty-four 1s" quantization matrix, mpeg2enc is the way to go. :)

Have you already made JACKET_P files with mpeg2enc? Can you describe exactly the procedure (and provide the avisynth script, if needed)? If that procedure can easily be automated (starting from a full size video frame in BMP format), I can probably write a plugin for PgcEdit that will create automatically the JACKET_P folder and its content. Seems it's an interesting challenge.

So far, I've only created MPEG stills for XVCD menus and audio clips, no Jackets-whatever, since my SAP doesn't support them. :o There are two ways to use mpeg2enc (found in the mjpegtools package) for generating an MPEG still picture: one = create a properly-sized .ppm image and pipe it with ppmtoy4m, the other = create an ImageSource(blah-blah-blah, end=0) AVS file and pipe it with avs2yuv:
ppmtoy4m -n 1 -F 30000:1001 -A 4:3 -I p -S 420mpeg2 -v 2 picture.ppm|mpeg2enc -f 7 -T 120 -K file=64_ones.txt -o stillpic.m2v
avs2yuv stillpic.avs -o -|mpeg2enc -v 1 -f 3 -F 4 -g 1 -G 18 -R 2 -b 7000 -q 3 -I 0 -Q 2 -s -K file=64_ones.txt -o stillpic.m2v

Thanks for the pointers, Midzuki. Unfortunately, it seems that creating JACKET_P pictures is a painful process, and all methods use expensive (or at least non-free) tools. I haven't found the information on how to use mpeg2enc to create the compliant MPEG file. Furthermore, all methods described in various threads seem to be problematic, as the jackets are recognized by some players only. Since I don't have any player that can display the jackets, it will be extremely difficult for me to test my code. So, I don't think I'll spend my time on that project. Sorry, Joe Justa. However, if someone can find or write a complete guide using only free command line tools, I could change my mind.

I have a player that can display jacket pictures, but only the large one (i'm guessing the smaller ones are for multi-disk players to display a menu of disks). If this works out I'll put the ability into the free version.

You are right, the large one is displayed full-screen when the player is stopped, the medium one is a thumb-nail for five-disc changers, and the small one is a thumb-nail for 300/400-disc changers.
From what I understand, however, all three files must be present even for the large picture to be displayed on a stand-alone player.
So, it would be excellent if MuxMan could create all three sizes as standard .m2v files, and it would be gravy if it could rename the files to J00___5L.MP2, J00___5M.MP2, and J00___5S.MP2!

Here are two methods posted many moons ago by people whose names have long since disappeared from the records:How to make a Jacket picture for DVD
Jacket cover images (generally referred to as Jacket_P images) are used by some DVD players to give a visual indication of what disc is available. Jacket_P images are most often utilized by players that can hold more than one DVD at a time (such as a Sony DVD jukebox).
Adding Jacket_P info to a disc is pretty simple. You will need to create one image that will be scaled to three different sizes (or, you could create a separate image for each size if you want to provide simplified graphics at lower resolutions). The three sizes are made available so that the DVD player can select the appropriate one for its display context (menus, details, etc.)
The sizes and required file names are as follows:
J00___5L.MP2 720x480 ntsc
J00___5M.MP2 176x112 ntsc
J00___5S.MP2 96x64 ntsc
J00___6L.MP2 720x576 pal
J00___6M.MP2 176x144 pal
J00___6S.MP2 96x80 pal
Note that your menu aspect ratio should be 4:3 and that there are three underscores in a row in the filenames.
As indicated by the filenames above, the images should be saved as MPEG2 encoded images.
Once you've made the files, create a Jacket_P folder, store the images in it, and include the folder on your dvd disk along with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
How to Make JACKET_P Pictures
Tools required: TMPGEnc
A JACKET_P picture is a picture placed on the DVD, which will be displayed when the DVD player is stopped, in place of the player's default picture, which is usually the manufacturer's logo. Not all manufacturers have yet implemented this feature in their DVD players. SONY, and perhaps others, have, and perhaps more will in the future. If your player has such a feature, it may be configured in the player's setup menus, and is usually disabled by default.
The JACKET_P picture can be different than the Menu background picture. In fact, it can be any picture you like. Many commercially pressed movie DVDs have JACKET_P pictures. Usually, the picture will be the same as that found on the cover, or jacket, of the DVD case. Hence, "Jacket Picture".
JACKET_P is the name of the folder in which the pictures are placed. The folder must be at the root level, along with the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. Inside the JACKET_P folder, there must be exactly three files, with specific names, and with very specific formats. The three files are the same image, at different sizes. The large size is displayed full-screen by single-disc players, when stopped. The smaller sizes are displayed as thumbnails by DVD changers. The filenames and sizes depend upon the format of the DVD, and are as follows.
For NTSC:
J00___5L.MP2 720 x 480
J00___5M.MP2 176 x 112
J00___5S.MP2 96 x 64
For PAL:
J00___6L.MP2 720 x 576
J00___6M.MP2 176 x 144
J00___6S.MP2 96 x 80
Those filenames consist of an uppercase letter 'J', followed by two digit 0's (not letter 'O's), followed by three underscores, another digit ('5' for NTSC, '6' for PAL), another upper-case letter ('L' for large, 'M' for medium, 'S' for small), and finally the .MP2 extension.
As can been seen from the file extensions, these are MPEG2 files, but not just any MPEG2 files. They must have a specific format, which as it turns out, is not at all hard to create, but was very difficult to figure out initially. Some very expensive software systems have the ability to create these MPEG2 files automatically, but I wanted to be able to create them using inexpensive or free software.
TMPEGEnc seemed to fit the bill, but after days and weeks of experimenting and reading on this and other forums, and following all the suggestions, directions, and tutorials, I was still unable to create an image that would display properly, if at all. Usually, what would be displayed on the screen would be a colour-challenged version of whatever image from the movie was being shown just before the stop button was pressed, as though that image were being held in a buffer within the player. The weird colours it was displayed in, made it almost like looking at a colour negative. And from my reading, it appeared that many others were having the very same problem.
After some detective work, I'm happy to say that I am now able to create perfect images, every time. I began by looking at the files in the JACKET_P folder of a commercial pressed NTSC movie DVD. Neither IrfanView nor SlowView could display them. XnView did display them, but gave me no additional information. Finally, Windows Media Player displayed them, and gave me an interesting bit of additional information: it showed the size of the large file to be 720 x 540, rather than 720 x 480. WMP showed the files I had encoded with TMPGEnc to be either 1068 x 480 (MPEG2), or 720 x 480 (MPEG1). WMP also reported using different codecs to display my files, that those it used to display the files from the commercial DVD. I knew the required files had to be MPEG2, but they also had to follow the same pattern as those found on commercial DVDs if they were to give the desired results. After much further work, I've found a solution, which consists of two points:
First, while everyone had been saying to select 'ES (Video only)' as the Stream Type, my success was achieved by setting the Stream Type to 'System (Video only)'.
Second, while others had been saying that no audio file was required, I found success only when I included an audio file, even though the output we are interested in is the video stream only. This may be because without an audio file, the video file created by TMPEGEnc will be a single frame only, whereas with an audio file specified, the created video stream will be as long as the audio stream. Naturally, the larger the audio file, the larger will be the created video stream. However, if the audio file is too small, the created video stream will be incorrect, just as it is when no audio file is used. The contents of the audio file is completely irrelevant, only the size. You will find a large selection of .wav files in the \WINDOWS\MEDIA directory. I found that RECYCLE.WAV was of a size which gave good results without bloating the size of the video file too much.
Once these two conditions were met, I found that the MPEG2 files generated by TMPGEnc displayed in WMP as 720 x 540, and also that they used the same codecs as the files from the commercial DVD. The proof of the pudding was in the burning, and every one I have burned since has displayed perfectly on my player/TV!
Here, then, is a step-by-step procedure for creating JACKET_P Pictures with TMPGEnc:
1. Use your favourite graphics program to create the picture you want your DVD to display when stopped. It should be 720 x 480 pixels (NTSC) [or 720 x 576 PAL]. Save as BMP or JPG, as TMPGEnc cannot import PNG files. Keep in mind the TV-safe area of the picture, or you may find some important elements of your graphic getting lost in the TV's overscan.
2. Start TMPGEnc, but cancel the wizard. Press 'Load', and load the appropriate template for your region ['DVD (NTSC).mfc' or 'DVD (PAL).mfc'].
3. In the 'Stream type' box, select 'System (Video only)'.
4. Using the 'Browse' button for each, set the 'Video source:' to the picture file you created, the 'Audio source:' to an audio file of your choice, and the 'Output file name:' to your destination file.
5. Press the 'Setting' button. Most of the settings within the 'MPEG Setting' dialog can be left at default values, unless they have been previously changed. TMPGEnc will remember changed settings from one session to the next. To change any setting that is greyed, you must first right-click on the setting name and select 'Unlock'.
6. On the 'Video' tab, 'Stream type:' should be 'MPEG-2 Video'. If it is not, change it. Unlock the 'Size:' setting, and set the size to 720 x 480. The rest of the settings should be okay by default. If you like to experiment, try changing them and observing the results. I set 'Rate control mode:' to 'Constant bitrate (CBR)', and 'Bitrate:' to '8000'.
7. On the 'Advanced' tab, 'Video source type' should match the graphic you created (interlaced or non-interlaced), 'Field order:' should match the field order of the DVD you are creating, 'Source aspect ratio:' should match your region's video standard, and 'Video arrange Method:' should be 'Full screen (keep aspect ratio)'. These should all be correct by default. Try experimenting with them if you like.
8. On the 'System' tab, 'Stream type:' should be 'MPEG-2 Program (VBR)'.
9. Press 'OK' to close the 'MPEG Setting' dialog. In the main window, press the 'Save' button if you would like to save all your settings as a template for future use. Use a name such as 'DVD_JACKET_P(NTSC).mcf'.
10. Now press the 'Start' button. Your image will be encoded. Go to your destination folder, and rename the created .mpg file to 'J00___5L.MP2'.
11. Press the 'Setting' button, and on the 'Video' tab, change 'Size:' to 176 x 112 (NTSC) [or 176 x 144 PAL]. Press 'OK' to close the 'MPEG Setting' dialog. Press 'Start' to encode the file. Rename the created .mpg file to 'J00___5M.MP2'.
12. Press the 'Setting' button, and on the 'Video' tab, change 'Size:' to 96 x 64 (NTSC) [or 96 x 80 PAL]. Press 'OK' to close the 'MPEG Setting' dialog. Press 'Start' to encode the file. Rename the created .mpg file to 'J00___5S.MP2'.
You're all done creating your JACKET_P pictures. All that remains is to burn the DVD and enjoy!

They are the methods pointed to by the links in post #36. But as I have explained, they are not good, for 2 reasons. TMPGEnc is not free, and those methods give bad results with many players. Furthermore, AFAIK, it is not possible to automate them, as they cannot be driven via command line. But thanks anyway.

2) MPEG videos containing only 1 frame, with or without a .mpg wrapper, and with or without an audio "background", are fully standard-compliant --- so, if a hardware manufacturer and/or a software media player have decided to be "selectively standard-compliant", that's an entirely-different story.:devil: ;) :D

Which standard is that? DVD-Video is a collection of specifications which are based on, and usually compliant with, mpeg-2. They are, however, subsets with more restrictions (bitrate, profile, color space, etc) and also expand on private areas (nav packs, subpictures, AC3 audio, etc). The jacket specification is probably even more restrictive, even if some players will display, for example, a vob file as a jacket.
I will be basing what MuxMan produces on examples I have from Sony authored disks, since they are the major proponent of the jacket folder. So far what I have found is the files contain a packetized elementary video stream containg a single 4:2:0 progressive I picture, but lacking a system header or escr data. This means thay are not fully compliant with the mpeg-2 standard (lacking a system header makes the file a packetized elementary stream file, and these, which normally are used for building transport streams to carry multiple programs, are supposed to carry timing information in the escr field from the original program stream for later reconstruction). But this is a format that a dvd player can easily process.
So one could start with a vob file, making sure it contained only a single frame of video, and remove the nav pack (which contains the system header as well as dsi and pci data)

As simple as that? Great! But AFAIK, there is still no free prog that can create VOB with stills in the thumbnail formats. So, we need your help, mpucoder! Thanks again for your intention to add that feature to muxman free!

While messing around with mpeg2enc, I just found that the "64-ones" matrix will cause "buffer under-runs" in mplex --- at least, when the target is the "full D-1" JACKET_P image. In this case, the matrices below should be used:
