Hi,
Everybody in Frace speak about QuEnc and said that it is very promising.:sly:

So, can you help me and give me more informations (what it is ? When can I use ? ...) about this options :

- trellis Quant
- "extreme & slow" settings
- force close closed GOP
- scene detection

When can I use the QLB matrix ? 2500 kbps ? More ? Less ?
Can I use Trellis and QLB in the same time ? (for lower bitrate)

if you go download QuEnc 0.54(link is in the first post of the QuEnc 0.54 thread) you will find a file called QuEnc_Settings.txt in the archive. that will tell you a little about some of the settings. Nic forgot to include it with 0.56 but i am sure it will be in the next release again. :)

"extreme & slow" settings : it is always experimental ? ( and what it is ?....)
When can I use the QLB matrix ? 2500 kbps ? More ? Less ?
Can I use Trellis and QLB in the same time ? (for lower bitrate)
GOP Size : 12 (When the source in not a dvd may be ?) ; Pal : 15 ; ntsc : 18 <== it s good ? no prblem if i use everytime 12 ?

"Extreme & Slow" - probably not worth the effort IMO. They make the encoding very slow with neglible improvements (sometimes they might worsen it too!)

QLB Matrix - well I myself would consider 2500 kbps a low bitrate, for 720 x 576/480 resolution anyway, so QLB would be worth a go I think. And yes it can be used safely with trellis, which will improve the encode on almost every occasion (so I'd recommend you'd use it!)

GOP - any of 12, 15, or 18 would be fine.


Of course the best way would be to test everything for yourself, and see which works best for you!

yes it will vary from film to film. in some cases it a noticable improvement while other times it looks no different. it should be rare for it to be worse though. these settings will no doubt change in later version to hopefully give a more consistant result.

no there is no problem if you use GOP 12 all the time. the 15 for PAL and 18 for NTSC is the maximum frames so its safe to use anything under those values.

Of course the best way would be to test everything for yourself, and see which works best for you!
