Hi & welcome to the board,
perhaps give us some more details of what you have and what exactly you want to do ... it's kinda hard to guess everything.
I _guess_ that you have some films in avi format with external subtitles (which format, btw?) ... then I _guess_ you are using dvobsub to overlay subtitles on playback ... further I _guess_ you are trying to author a dvd containing some sort of subtitles (how many? hardcoded? selectable?) ...

one film has video compression DIVX Codec and Audio format MPEG layer-3
the other is XVID and also mpeg layer-3
i really am a n00b to the logistics of file formats and have never had problems before burning dvd with nero vision express and svcd with the burn image option in nero 6.
sorry if this doesnt help but im not sure what other info you need and where to find it.

smiller667 was supposing that the subs for the AVI were external, and based on what you're saying, that seems to be the case. So, for the AVI (DivX or XviD) with subs, you must have idx/sub or ssa or srt, etc. files on the side with the same name as the movie. If so, then they'll get played when you play the AVI, but there's no way they're going to wind up on the DVD without reprocessing.

Hi-
It kind of depends on whether you want to make them selectable on the DVD, or if you don't mind that they're burned into the video. And if selectable, it depends on your authoring program.
If burned in, when reencoding for DVD, you add them to the AviSynth script using the TextSub or VobSub commands (which you use depends on the sub format they're in). If selectable, the format they must be in is determined by the authoring program. I prefer DVDAuthorGUI because it'll take text based subs, such as SSA or SRT.
However, this isn't really for newcomers. I don't know anything about Nero Vision Express, but Doom9 has a couple of guides. Here's one which requires CCE as the encoder, that'll burn the subs into the video:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/avi2dvdr.htm
And here's one that requires either CCE, Canopus Procoder or TMPGEnc for encoding, and also requires Scenarist for the authoring, making the subs selectable on the DVD:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm
Here's information on DVDAuthorGUI. But it requires that you've already reencoded your AVI to MPEG2, and have the AC3 audio. The subs can be already in the .mpg, or you can add them into the DVD with the GUI:

Here are a bunch of guides from a different site. One of them might be what you want:

And maybe smiller667 has some more ideas for you.
