Hey, this is my first feature request so let me say: I love this app. Thanks. It's great.
That being said, it works beautifully in all cases with ESS support on, using XVID, with the DVP642/37 (0531).
Except.
There appears to be a bug in the DVP642 (at least with the current firmware) that causes colors to display improperly if the divx/xvid (seen it with both) has a vertical resolution of 416. Less is fine. More is fine. 416 causes problems for some reason. It is similar to how a YUY2 clip displays when the player thinks it's RGB. Skintones are blue, etc.
Any chance of a workaround feature? Maybe tie it into the ESS support? I'll be happy to test any clips regarding the issue.

Thanks,
-Kyn

Interesting... Is the only resolution that you have problems with - 560x416? (coz AutoGK always tries to get a perfect 4:3 ratio for such sources)

Thanks Kyn for posting this one coz I am having the same prob with my dvp642/37 (firmware not yet updated) as colors were not displayed correctly in one of my encoded movie...

Just a thought but I really do not know where the problem is...

Hope this can be figure out soon...

Thanks,

Yes, the only resolution that I have seen AutoGK generate that produces this effect is 544x416. After work, I'll generate some other 416 vertical resolution clips and see if they exhibit the same behaviour.
Thanks,

I have this resolution (GSpot generated) particularly in that encoded movie:

624x336 (1.86:1) [=13:7]

thnx,

Wow. I'm almost certain that resolution has worked for me. Can you check your firmware version?
1) Open disc tray
2) punch 7,8,9 on the remote
3) hit ok on the remote
0531 is the latest for our player currently (although looks like a firmware update is due anyday now) This came shipped on my /37
Can you trim me off a few minutes of your clip and post a link?

Thanks,
-Kyn

New firmware for 642 is out. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85858

Ok, I'm stumped. The same clip encoded at 512x384 & 544x416 have the color issue. 576x448 is fine.. Also your 624x336 worked fine. This is all with XVID. Now, I know I've played 512x384 encodes with this thing before (although possibly with DIVX), so I don't have this bug nailed down like I thought I did. I will post again when I have a real workaround request. Thanks for your time, Lenox. :)

(Or maybe that firmware update will come out and solve everything. :) )

Ok, the latest firmware for the 37 is located at:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp642_37/dvp642_37_fus_eng.zip

Flashed the firmware, no change with this problem from my previous post. I'll post again when I have a real idea of the exact circumstances that cause this bug. I'm nearly certain it's a resolution issue, it's particularily interesting that the color turns normal when you hit the "zoom" button. Of course watching the film in 2x zoom is not very doable. I might add that I've tried changing the display to "multi" as some have suggested, no perceivable change.

Thanks,
-Kyn

Today, I did the updgrade and still it played like that. Does it has something to do with the bitrate? The bitrate for this movie was 1163 kb/s.

I too saw a similar thing today with a 512x416 XVID cartoon. Plays fine on the PC, but DVP642 plays it as if R and B were switched.

I have no clue what tool was used to encode the clip though, so I'm not trying to report a AutoGK error here: just letting you know that yet another XVID with 416 vertical resolution doesn't play properly.

Can someone make a comprehensive resolution test? I.e take three sources with AR 1.33, 1.85 and 2.35. Then make fixed width encodings (target quality based are simpler and faster) with width starting from 400 up to 720 with increments of 16 (of course ESS option on). And then play all this on your standalone to see which ones are failing. Only then we can think about solutions...

I have the DVP630 (or 632?), which is the same device for europe and have the newest firmware (1109).

If you mean by wrong colors, that it looks kinda weird and 'psychedelic', hit the setup button, exit setup right away and colors are fine, for what reason ever....

At least that worked for me on 'wrong colored' files I encountered so far, maybe it does also for you. Didn't narrow down the issue of that, my thought was that it could be related to QPel or GMC since the ESS chipset doesn't support that.....(I can't tell whether GMC or Qpel have been used, since I didn't encode those files myself, let's leave it that way.....)

I also thought that the "psychadelic" playback I was getting all along was from GMC or Q-Pel settings used in encoding. I tried your method, and what do you know it does work so I confirm!

I have the Philips DVP642/37 firmware 1109.

Now what is causing the Psychadelic colors?
