Cannot read straight avi like TMPG?

TMMPG is very easy to use. you can open a avi file , click the mpeg-2 option and your on ur way. very easy. But it is slow.
CCE is very fast but why cant CCE read an avi and convert to a mpeg? why does it need ot read of a avs file? and even after reading a avs file my output isnt a mpeg. can someone pleas ehelp me?

You're correct that cce can't natively read avi files (and an avi can be all kinds of things of course, since it just a container).

So for that reason you need a avs (avisynth) file that tells cce what to do. You could use dvd2scvd to encode your avi using cce. This might be an easier option for you ;)

Uh, what makes you think CCE can't read AVI files? Sure it can. Just drop it into CCE or do the standard File - Open...

ehm, well last time I tried (I admit that was a long time ago) it wouldn't work. So if I nee dto do it now I always use avisynth. So I was under the impression it was not possible.

CCE does handle avis directly but unless your avi is the correct output dimensions (obviously usually 720 x 576/480) then the feature is rather useless.

If you take a DVD, save it as a lossless avi and then feed it into CCE, then the encoding speed should be faster (especially with dual CPU, from memory). Of course the HD space required is prohibitive.
