Is it possible to capture video progressively from Sony's Digital 8 tapes? If yes can anyone explain how it can be done, preferably with Premiere?

If not, would exporting the project de-interlaced result in something ackward?

quick answer is no...you'll be capturing in interlaced

is your target TV, PC or DVD, are you trying for the 24p film look or 30p?

if your target is TV then it's better to keep it interlaced or the footage will have a "Ghosting" effect and is quite annoying.

it is possible to convert the footage into 24p but NOT with Premiere, you'll need After Effects for that with the Magic Bullet and/or Twixtor 2 plug-ins, Magic Bullet has a very powerful deinterlacer and deartifactor(but is slow) and Twixtor's frame rate converter is good (better than Magic Bullets) and when using them together you get really good results, and the resulting footage can be authored into a 24p DVD or you can do a 3:2 pulldown and view it on TV.

if your target is PC then use avisynth to make it progressive

Target is mainly DVD/TV but have some projects for pc only.

What do u mean with 24p and 30p? Is it frames per second?

ya..interlaced is 60i (60 half frames/seconds), 60p (60 full frames/seconds), film is 24p (24 full frames/sec), 30p(30full frames/seconds).

PC only projects may look better at 30p. contrary to popular belief 30p doesn't give the film look.

converting 60i to 24p is tricky - if not filmed correctly then the resulting footage won't look right - hard to explain...have to be seen.

to faithfully produce a 24p from 60i the footage must be shot with the shutter at 1/60 then converted from 60i to 60p with RE:Vision Effects Deinterlacer - then convert 60p to 24p with RE:Vision Effects Twixtor. you can also use magic bullet to convert 60i to 24p but it'll take forever and you'll probably forget about the project :)

to append to hendrix' post:

or use avisynth a good boobing deinterlacer like tdeint or kerneldeint. and
convert60ito24p or mvconvert60ito24p

convert60ito24p uses blending to achieve the 60 to 24 conversion

and

mvconvert60ito24p uses motion compensation.
