Hello everyone.
I've been using AutoGK for a while, but only recently have I been having problems with the final avi's. The encoding process with AutoGK is pretty straightforward, but when I click on the finished avi to open it, I get "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Additionally, I can't play the file with the DivX player either ("AviParser: readInputFilter() Failed to read: 8).
System specs:
OS: Windows XP Home edition 5.1, Build 2600: Service Pack 1 (even though AutoGK says my system is running Windows98)
Motherboard: Asus P4C800E Deluxe
CPU: P4 3.0E GHz
System RAM: 1GB Kingston Valueram PC3200
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro-U w/Heatpipe
Sound Card: M-Audio Revolution
Ripper: DVD Decrypter v3.5.1.0
Media Player1: Windows Media Player 10 v10.00.00.3646
Media Player2: DivX Player v2.5.5

Any help would be appreciated.

For the record: I own this DVD. I'm putting a copy on the hard drive because sometimes I'm too lazy to get up and put the disc in the drive.

AVI files with > 2Gb in size cannot be played in DivX player and WMP often has issues with them as well. You need to try a proper player like BSplayer, VLC, MPC...

Objective
I did some testing to see if the playback problems I was experiencing were encoding related or media player related.
Procedure
I ripped my copy of Spy Game to the hard drive using DVD Decrypter v3.5.1.0. Then I made 4 avi's using AutoGK v.1.60
- sg1900.avi: an avi with a specified file size of 1900 mb
- sg2100.avi: an avi with a file size of 2100 mb (to see which players would play the <2gig file, but not the >2 gig file)
- sg4000.avi: an avi with a file size of 4000 mb. This was done mostly to check the video quality vs. the 2100 and the 1900 kb files. If I can get better video quality by spreading one movie over the full 4.4 gigs availalbe on a DVD+R, then that's what I want to do.
- sg(max quality).avi: I set the file size to "maximum quality" to see how big a file AutoGK would say max quality is. I also wanted to check the video quality of this file vs. the 4000 mb file.
System Specs
See post 1 of this thread.
Media Players Tested
- Divx Player v.2.6
- Windows Media Player 10 v.10.00.00.3646
- Media Player Classic v.6.4.8.2
- The Core Media Player (the latest free version)
- BSplayer (the latest free version)

Playback Problems
- Type 1: playback starte normally. The video looks fine; the audio sounds fine and is synced with the video. A few seconds into playback, however, the audio drops out and an error message pops up saying, "__ media player has ecountered a problem and needs to close." The video continues to play, but if I try to fast forward, rewind, pause, or stop, the video freezes and I can't do anything but close the application.
- Type 2: As soon as I open the file, the video looks fine, but the audio sounds like its on fast forward and is not synced with the video. A few seconds later, the audio drops out and an error message pops up saying, "__ media player has ecountered a problem and needs to close." The video continues to play, but if I try to fast forward, rewind, pause, or stop, the video freezes and I can't do anything but close the application.
Results (playback)
- No; type 1 = the file did not play correctly and the problem was of Type 1 described above
- No; type 2 = the file did not play correctly and the problem was of Type 2 described above
- Yes = the file played with no problems

I was very surprised with the results of sg1900.avi. With a file size less than 2G, I expected all the media players to play that file. The fact that all the players except Media Player Classic had problems tells me that the problem probably lies in the way the file was encoded by AutoGK and MPC somehow does not see the problem or plays the file in a different way than the others.
In another test, with the same VOBs used to make sg1900, 2100, 4000,and max, I encoded a 1900 mb file using Dr. Divx {sg1900(divx)} and it played in all the players with no problmes.
Results (video quality)
I saw no appreciable difference in the video quality of the 2100 mb file vs the 4000 mb file. The "max quality" file turned out to be ~2600 mb and it seemed almost as good as the 4000 mb file.

Conclusions
Despite the problems I've been having with my AutoGK-encoded files recently, I'll continue to use it because Media Player Classic has become my player of choice for playback of avi files. Not only did it play all files in this test, but it has much more funtionality than the Divx player or Windows Media Player 10. The only problem with this approach is that I don't know if one day the the suspected encoding problems will cause MPC to not play my avi's. In other words, this seems more like a workaround than a fix. Addtionally, the fact that I was able to make a second 1900 mb file with a different program that played in all the media players where the AutoGK files didn't play leads me to believe that a problem occurred during the AutoGK encoding process.
As for video quality, I'm still having a hard time believing that compressing 6 gigs of VOBs down to 2 gigs looks just as good as 6 gigs compressed down to 4.4 gigs. I'll have to play with this for a while to totally convince myself that this is true.
Next, I'll post a couple of log files so anyone can take a look and see if something's there that might cause the Type1 and Type2 problems described in post 4 of this thread. Sorry for the exhaustive report, but I'd really like to know if I'm doing something wrong of if there's something out of whack with my system.

Hi-
The fact that all the players except Media Player Classic had problems tells me that the problem probably lies in the way the file was encoded by AutoGK and MPC somehow does not see the problem or plays the file in a different way than the others.
I would draw a different conclusion. First I would conclude that the DivX player and the WMP are crap, something most people around here already know, and which you proved for yourself. I think that something else is at work here, although I'm not exactly sure what it is. My guess is that it's the decoder being used.
However, I'm very surprised that BS Player can't play it. Try this; right-click the BS Player console, and go Options->Preferences, and make sure the "Use Overlay" is checked, and then just to the right of that, change it to "Mode 2" (if it's set to Mode 1), and try again.
Also, try and find out what's decoding the XviD AVI. One way to determine that is to play a "normal" small movie in BS Player, right-click the video screen, and go to Properties and then check. I suspect that you may have DivX decoding it, rather than the XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder, or ffdshow. If that's the case, change it and try again. Let us know if you need help in doing that.

manono,
I have to admit that I'm a little late to the game when it comes to ripping/encoding/media player options. My education started in May 04 when I purchased my first HTPC.
I've given up on using the divx player for anything, but I still plan to use WMP for converting my CD collection to mp3s and wma's (unless someone can steer me to something better; I'm open to suggestions :))
Thanks for pointing out that my logic might be faulty in diagnosing the problem. Now that you've said it, it makes sense that it could very well be the decoder and not the encoder. I'm at work right now(inappropriately using company resources) so I can't try all the things you suggested, but I'll definitely give it a shot in the next couple of days and report back (watching Spiderman 2 is on the docket for tonight, so I don't know if I can try anything).

Oh, I just noticed this - there is no way AutoGK may misdetect your system (if you type "ver" in the windows console you will see what version you're running)
P.S. the version numbers for windows are from:

It was set to Mode 1. I changed it to "Mode 2", but it made no diffrence. None of the files would play correctly.

I think I need help with this one. When you say a "normal" small movie, do you mean a movie straight from the DVD or an avi that plays correctly. I tried to play "Harry Potter 3" from the DVD, but kept getting the error message "can't open the file". When I opened an avi that I know to work correctly and went to properties, I'm presented with three options:
- Divx 3.11 properties
- Divx 4+ properties
- ffdshow properties
They all have slider bars for various paramters such as brightness, saturation, contrast, etc., but I can't change any values; I can't slide any of the bars for any of the options. So, I don't know what's decoding it.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but how do I get to the windows console? Also, when I open DVD Decrypter it says that I'm running Windows Xp Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600: Service Pack 1). When I boot up the computer, it says shows a Windows Xp screen. In the startup menu, there's a "what's new in Windows Xp" tour
Windows XP brims with new features, improved programs, and tools. See what’s new; take an entertaining tour; learn about the programs Windows XP contains, including systems, accessories, and communications and entertainment programs. Read articles containing full descriptions for performing key tasks from start to finish. Look up unfamiliar terms in the glossary. Learn the benefits of registering your copy of Windows XP online.
I never questioned my operating system until now. Are you sure AutoGK can't misdetect my system?

...but how do I get to the windows console?
Start->Run->type "cmd"->OK. Then just type in "ver" and hit "Enter".
About DivX possibly decoding your XviD files. Open the DivX player, and deselect "Support Generic Mpeg-4" from the "Quality Settings" tab of the decoder.
I got that from another thread, so I don't know for sure if it'll work. But it should force another decoder to kick in for XviD.

Before you reported this I thought it can't :)
It uses WinAPI to get the version and I have hard time imagining that XP can report 4.10.67766446 (that's why I'm asking what "ver" reports).

Just for the heck of it, I encoded my copy of Star Wars Episode II with AutoGK 1.60. I tried to play it back on BSplayer and ran into the Type2 problems I described in an earlier post:
- Type 2: As soon as I open the file, the video looks fine, but the audio sounds like its on fast forward and is not synced with the video. A few seconds later, the audio drops out and an error message pops up saying, "__ media player has ecountered a problem and needs to close." The video continues to play, but if I try to fast forward, rewind, pause, or stop, the video freezes and I can't do anything but close the application.
I uninstalled and then reinstalled the player, but nothing changed.
As with my Spy Game rips, Star Wars played back fine on Media Player Classic.
I did this test to make sure the problem wasn't isolated to a single disc. Unfortunately, it wasn't. At this point, this is mostly academic anyway. As I stated in an earlier post, I like the interface and capabilities of Media Player Classic and it has no problems playing back my rips. So I'm going to leave this problem alone for now. If anyone still has any suggestions, I'm willing to keep experimenting to see if we can get to the source of this problem.
Oh, and to make matters even more confusing, I encoded a couple of discs of X-Files with AutoGK 1.60. Each file (8 total) was 630 Mb in size and they all played back perfectly on Divx Player, Windows Media 10, Media Player Classic...and BSplayer.
Go figure. For shits and grins, I'l post the log file for one of the X-Files episodes. Maybe something's there that will catch someone's attention:

I'm still convinced that its a size issue. MPC may not use directshow decoders but some other built in decoder, that's why it always works. I remember having the same issues a while back with 3CD rips files (2100Mb), but when you split it into 700Mb I've never had any playback problems. So I suggest you do a rip of say 1500Mb on the source that fail at 2Gb and see for yourself (or you can try splitting you 2100Mb files into two and check how they are played).

I failed to mention in my initial report that the SpyGame2100.avi was set up for a 3 CD rip and none of the 700Mb files played correctly in any of the media players except Media Player Classic. But just to be somewhat thorough, I did a 2 CD rip (1400Mb) of Treasure Planet. As I expected, neither the 1400Mb avi or cd1.avi or cd2.avi played correctly (except on MPC, of course).
This is a real head scratcher, ain't it? I have no clue as to what might be happening here. Do you think I need to uninstall and reinstall something? I don't know. I'm at a total loss.
I think we're on the right track in suspecting it's got something to do with the decoder, but I don't know what action to take to get the proper decoder to work with BSplayer. Manono has already made a suggestion and I replied, but there hasn't been a response to my reply.
Anyway, here's the Treasure Planet log:
