Editing causing out of sync problems.

When I capture DV, the file is not out of sync. But if I cut or edit it, it becomes out of sync.

The same is true of mpeg. If I convert the DV file directly to mpeg with TMPGenc. I have no problems. But if I cut or edit the mpeg, it becomes out of sync.

Any ideas on what causes this? And how do I fix it?

Can't say I've experienced this myself, but have seen others complain about it.
What program are you using to capture and cut your DV and MPEG?
What is your process?

I capture the DV and then edit in VDUBmod or AVIsynth, then feed to TMPGEnc.

I sometimes used Ulead VideoStudio. Although because of this problem, I haven't done much editing lately.

Depending on what version of VideoStudio you have it might be a DV type 1 VS Type 2 problem.

I have UleadVideo Studio6 and it captures Type 1 DV only. Which is a problem for me becuase i like VirtualDUBmod for editing.

The difference between the types is how the audio is interleaved in the file with the Video.

Might want to try capturing with a different program like WinDV as Type2 DV and then edit that file to see if you still have the sync issue.

I have Ulead Video Studio 7 (which allows type 1 or type 2). I was under the impression that type 2 was more likely to be out of sync than type 1.

Well, you could be right about more likely to be out of sync with type 2. But I don't know, it's been working for me.
Type 2 is more compatible with my programs.
I use Vdubmod to cut DV files and havn't had any sync issues.

There is obviously something in your process causing the out of sync.
All I can suggest is try different programs to see if they all do it.

VirtualDub experimental version 1.6.0 and 1.6.1 is able load the audio and video of DV type 1.

I have tried to cut certain parts of a small (type 1) DV file using "direct stream copy" in Vdub 1.6.1 experimental. It seems to be working OK. I will try it on a larger file.

I am not an expert in vdub but I am assuming that the "direct stream copy" ensures that the DV file isn't being re-encoded when the only thing that I am doing is cutting out stuff.

That's correct; there's no re-encoding in "direct stream copy" mode :)

Good to know. This means that I can cut parts of the DV type 1 file in vdub experimental 1.6.1 without converting the output to type 2 DV as long as I don't do any editing other than cutting out some stuff. In other words, cutting out parts of the type 1 DV file in "direct stream copy" mode will leave the outputed DV as type 1. If this is the case, I might start to do my editing in vdub experimental 1.6.1. This might solve my out of sync editing problem.

Editing mpeg-2 with VideoRedo appears to have solved my audio sync problem as far as mpeg is concerned. Videoredo has a built-in sync feature that will correct for errors (for example, dropped frames) to make the edited mpeg in sync.
