I was thinking for support I would use quicktime. now my question is what would be a codec/audio/container that would give good support. I was thinking any codec that supported by it. So maybe vp3,or just plain old mpeg 4. Mpeg 4 container with aac audio. my question is are there any good encoders other then quicktime 6 pro and what would u suggest in video/audio/container for easy support. I just curious if it possible for vp6 to be used and for it to be grabbed by quicktime with a update thanx.

Try 3ivx or Divx, they are MPEG4 ASP codecs, so pretty good quality, they are both quicktime plugins under MacOS X. I'm not sure if Divx is available as a QT plugin for Windows, but I'm pretty sure 3ivx is.

3ivx MPEG4 simple is the best QT codec for streaming or progressive download if you are decoding with the QT standard install, and no extra plug-ins, at lower bit rates, in my opinion.
See some preliminary tests we did at http://video.conncoll.edu/test/codecs/
3ivx MPEG4 Advanced Simple is probably better, but requires a downloadable plug-in.
Other downloadable QT codecs that might give good efficiency are the ZyGoVideo and Streambox ACT-L2, but we never tested these.

hey does anyone now a good encodeing guide for huffy to recode2. As i finding recode2 to be only for dvd footage. I also reading that u can force recode2 to be played on default in quicktime. Will quicktime search for the plugin?

You can use xvid. Just disable gmc, qpel, b-frames, and use h.263 matrix. Then mux it into mpeg-4 container.

will it play without xvid codec installed?

Yeah. You can use all the ASP features if you're expecting the audience to have 3ivX for QT installed, as well.

I generate Mpeg4/AAC in MOV encodes for quite a few clients now, which are suitable for streaming!
Mpeg4/AAC in MOV seems to work a little better than Mpeg4/AAC in MP4, but which ever container you decide to adopt, you will have to encode using "simple profile" settings and AAC-LC audio.
I have a few examples on my web site if you're interested.
Cheers

The main problem people (and not just us) have with MPEG4 streaming in QT is audio going out of sync with the video after a while. We ended up using the QT packetizer, which keeps sync, instead of the native MPEG4 packetizer, which did not for us.

Anyone have the same issues?

Although a DivX QT Component is available for Mac OS X in QT form, it is not for Windows.

Anyone have the same issues? I've not come across any sync issues myself but as the encodes I generate for my clients are no longer than 90 seconds, I guess I'm not likely too!
What length encodes have you generated and how quickly did you notice it falling out of sync?

Well, you usually don't notice the lack of sync until about 20 minutes or so into the video, if you start from the beginning of the stream, not if you scrub ahead to it and start playing. Then it gets worse and worse with time.
I have to do more testing though, so I can't definitely say it's a problem. Sorry, did not mean to alarm anyone.

xvid, 3ivx, divx5, nero digital, apple mpeg-4 are all mpeg-4 compliant, meaning they can all be played in quicktime when in .mp4 (if you dont use specific codec settings listed above, which quicktime cant handle)
