Need information on codecs?

I'm about to make a school project on video codecs and need to find some documentation on video codecs and how they work and are build.
Also I need to find documentation on types of codecs and what they each are good for.
I have tryed to find sites about this but without luck.
Does any of you guys know where to find information about this??
