How to split DVD-9 to 2x DVD-5 keeping original VOBs?

I would like to ask your help with the following problem: I want to split DVD-9 disc to 2 DVD-5 discs keeping original VOB files so the transition back to DVD-9 will be easy in case later I'll want to burn the movie on a double layer media. I can save the original IFO files in separate folder so the only problem is to split and still keep the original VOB files. Is there any way to achieve that?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)

First of all, I don't have a VobBlanker guide on DVD splitting.:(

In a nutshell, I would open up two sessions of VobBlanker at the same time. One for disc 1 and the other for disc 2. Blank out the first half of your Title movie in for disc one and the other half for disc 2. Always look at your Final size field top right. If the size exceeds on one disc you have to adjust. Keep here...blank here. You can also work with the other extras Titles. Keep here...blank here. Just switch back and forth between sessions. When you are satisfied with the sizes. Process each separately. Save their Process logs to put into your temp folder with your original IFOs and BUPs. This temp folder will be burnt with your other folders.

VobBlanker does have previewing capabilities and you have to use the Prev/Cut button.

With your logs, you can have an idea of how to put back your movie into its original state. Doing it the VobBlanker way, you have all your cells untouched, just as long you don't strip out any audio or subtitle streams.

Thanks :) So as I understand you think this would be the easiest way to get back to DVD-9, but are you sure there is no way to leave VOBs as they are and just add some dummy blanks? Because as I said above in this case transition back to DVD-9 would be trivial :)

and those dummy blank VOBs should have the same structure as the originals but being of much smaller size, something along the lines of what DvdReMake does, when hidding cells, and as I understand VobBlanker has the same capability. Maybe there is a way to use it to solve this problem?

I recommend you blank on a Cell level instead of a VOB. A cell could be split between VOBs. You could get playback problems.

But I can copy "border" VOB file to both discs so even if some cell gets splitted it will not be used in playback. The only problem is how to create those dummy blank VOB files with the same structure as the originals. Any suggestions? Maybe the same way DvdReMake does that?

Say your split was at chapter 18, so after using VobBlanker. This is what you’ll have for both discs. The ones in RED are your blanked cells. Note: Since [V/C Id: 2/1] was blanked out in PGC_1, it will also be blanked out in your PGC_2. There is only one instance of this cell in your VOBs. PGC_1 and and PGC_2 are just sharing it.

To join them back, I would use DVD Decrypter to rip in cells. Here, you need to go to Tools > Settings.. > File Mode Tab, and set the File option to “by Cell ID”. Go to File Mode and select only your VTS_01 movie VOBs only.

VTS_01_1.VOB .. VTS_01_*.VOB.

Ripped disc 1 and 2 to separate folders.

You should have these in your ripped folders.

Run VobEdit and open up your first VOB, VTS_01_001.VOB. Go top left and click “Edit / Join CellVobs”. Don’t select Join Clips because this would renumber VOB IDs. We don’t want that.

After VobEdit processing, you’ll be back to your original VTS_01 VOBs again with the correct VOB and Cell IDs.

With your original IFOs restored, you’re back in business. VTS_01_0.IFO is still pointing to the right cells. ;) Do this procedure for Titlesets you have split.

Nobody said it was going to be easy. You need to understand the consequences of splitting now and joining later. Think of all the people who did VCDs and SVCDs and wanted to convert to DVDs now that they got a DVD burner.

To recover the original DVD, you also can use Cell extration and Cell replacement ability of VobBlanker.

Let say,
Open disc 2 in VobBlanker:
Select the non-blanked cells in disc2. Extract them to different files (currently you have to do this cell per cell, may be I can optimize this). Another choice is extract all the cells to different files (only one button).

Open disc 1 in VobBlanker:
Select the blanked cells (the ones you have extracted from disc 2) and replace the blanked cells with the extracted ones. Again, the selection has to be done cell by cell, but processing the DVD is only done once.
