Anime question - general - one long stream - why?

I've noticed a few of my anime series dvds are one long stream! this is getting very anoying when backing them up lol.
why? i would of thought that the series would be all seperate streams befroe dvd creation so this makes no sence to me?
can anyone shine some light on the subject?

Well there is nothing wrong with the method other than as you say it is a pain to deal with. A good trick to use is to extract the chapter list and then refference it with the listed chapters to figure out where to place keyframes so you can easily cut later or encode the segments you want.

simple. it all comes on one digibeta tape.

also, in some cases it's easier to deal with 2 or 3 big files (not counting subs) than a heap of them. considering on playback of the DVD it makes no difference at all.

it's not too much of a problem to simply seek to the start of each episode and add a trim to the avisynth script.

bottom line, DVDs aren't made to be backed up :)

it would be useful to have separate streams for the sake of the audio, which i cannot stand the idea of re-encoding. i suppose it can be split, but there's a certain amount of uncertainty in ac3 frame accuracy then (you need to figure out delays and stuff).

OGM supports chapters, doesn't it? that seems like a good solution.

thanks for the replys guys, i think i will go with mkv or ogm. as its a better way than mine. (using dvd2avi and trim)
