View Full Version : Best way to determine success?

Do you all just watch the rebuilt copy all the way through? I used to just watch a few minutes of the new copy, but after reading about all the potential problems (audio dropout, etc.), I'm guessing that you have to be a bit more thorough to avoid any nasty surprises down the road. So does anyone have a quicker way to verify a successful rebuild?
And a second, somewhat related problem: I just finished backing up Star Wars Episode II WS R1 (my first ILVU title). I can tell which VTS set has multiangle material from DVD-RB, but there aren't any obvious signs of where it actually is; nothing in the 'extras area'. Any program or way to analyze the files that will let me zero in on where the multiangle video actually is?

One point to consider is that people don't usually post unless they have a problem. The vast majority of DVD-RB users have no problems whatsoever.
If you want to see what is multiangle, set the switch ILVU_Extract=1 in the [Options] section of Rebuilder.ini. Then the ILVU portions will be extracted and deinterleaved into VTS_XX_X.VOB files in the D2VAVS directory. The Starwars movies have 3 short angles at the beginning and end -- the scrolling "EPISODE 3 - A NEW HOPE" text, for example, is displayed in one of three languages.
Don't forget to reset ILVU_Extract=0 (or delete it) after you're done -- as the extraction adds time to the PREPARE phase and really doesn't accomplish anything (yet).

I am not expert so I watch burned copy til end. Man, imagine when shutter was not fixed, how many SW copies had I made + how many times had I watched the whole movie in order to verify if the backup was successful?

i mostly test only the menu button in my standalone and the first start of the movie after i've burned it, thats it. i dont have any major problem with dvd-RB since 0.60. most of my project was not preprocess. hardly view the full movie backup after encoding/burning all by myself. but a few house members who always watch my backup dont have any complaint with it.:D

I generally watch a few minutes of a few chapters, test the menus, then stick the DVD+RW on a shelf and wait for my kids to watch it end-to-end. When they say it's good, I burn a final copy. (Occasionally I get lucky and get a chance to make the backup before we watch the movie for the first time; then, we just watch the backup and I don't have to tie up a R/W + disk space for a month or two.)

IfoEdit will help here. If there are multiple angles, you can see that by opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO - you'll see it in the VMG Overview, under "Title Play Maps":
Title 2: VTS_04_*, TTN_1 (Angles: 3) (Chapters: 1) (Start Sector 11247)
If it has ILVU, you won't see it there; you have to open the particular VTS_nn_0.IFO. In either case, once you open the VTS_nn_0.IFO in IfoEdit, you'll see in the VTS overview a list of program chains and cells; the cells that are angles or ILVU are flagged as such (see below; it would say "ILVU" rather than "angle" in that column if it had ILVU; if it has neither, that column is blank). You can double-click on any cell to see a preview; scrolling through the preview, you'll see the contents of all angles.
[Ch 01] [Pg 01] [Cell 01] [V/C Id: 7/ 1] (Angle 1): time: 00:00:27.13 / 30 fps [Pos: 00:00:27.13] [Frames: 823] SP/ILVU/DISC/SA:[ no/yes/yes/yes]
[Cell 02] [V/C Id: 8/ 1] (Angle 2): time: 00:00:27.13 / 30 fps [Pos: 00:00:27.13] [Frames: 823] SP/ILVU/DISC/SA:[ no/yes/yes/yes]

The stutter problem is rare.... very, very rare. In fact I believe that out of over 100,000+ users fewer than 10 reported any stuttering at all. I've backed up hundreds of DVDs and only saw a stutter on one -- and it wasn't related to this fix at all.
Everybody thinks his/her problem is the most important and so they post about it... but if you look back through Doom9 you'll see it was the same few people posting over and over.
That doesn't mean I don't want to fix all problems -- but let's be reasonable folks... stop treating this as if the sky is falling.

Then let me report stuttering. My Norcent DP 313 can't play most of my rebuilds. Recent versions of rebuilder do work, but I see occasional stuttering. The back story to the seven year itch stutters always at this one point where Marilyn Monroe's dress flys up. I've given up testing that disc since I've backed it up several times, and it works on my other DVD players. But it looks like most of the stuttering is rare at this point, but then I've not been using the Norcent much anymore.

Well, some of us think the idea of a beta test is to report all problems, regardless of how important or unimportant they are.
Please don't think of all problem reports as complaints; lots of us are very happy to help with the testing of your great program.

I want to catch all the errors and I don't mind reporting. When you hear the report from the same person, in 15 threads, with 20 posts... that ISN'T reporting -- it's nagging.
