It may be old nuz for some, but I think it's worth (re)mentionning.
Playing around with VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)
I have been able to display SVCD subtitles from "old" SVCDs backup I made with DVD2SVCD.
I could not do it at first, so I'll trace here the exact parameters I have used (on a 1024x768 display) :
- first, it seemed that the contextual menu does not work, even if a subtitle entry is proposed.
- in the settings/preferences menu, under modules/decoder, there is a cvdsub entry; I set the horiz position to "-110" and aspect ratio correction to "4:3".
- to launch the SVCD I went in File/open Disc; there in the Disc tab, I have seleted "DVD (menus)", set subtitles track to "0" and device name to my CDROM drive. It also worked with a 2-subs SVCD setting track to "1".
I haven't tested menus, as I don't use them in SVCD.
Noted that VLC is a bit "sensitive", sometimes after changing the setting, no subs would display first. Stopping the video and reopening it would just do the trick... Strange...
I guess that by playing around and reading VLC forums, something good can come out of this ;) Plus : VLC is open source, so crazy coders may take a look at how they have done this (sorry, I am just a lame end-user).
By the way, If anyone knows another way to display SVCD subs, I am interested...
