View Full Version : DVDs are ripping very slowly

I've been using DVD Decrypter (v3.5.1.0) to create .ISO images of a few DVDs I own (HTPC baby!) and I've noticed that it's going really slow. It seems like it's locked at about 2.0x speed (~25 min for a single layer DVD & 45-50 min for a DL disc), which just doesn't seem right to me.
My drive is a Plextor PX-708A, which claims DVD-ROM read speeds of up to 12x. I think I have all the settings correct in DVD Decrypter, but it's very likely that I'm missing something big here. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
You should confirm that you have your IDE controller in DMA mode. It varies, depending on operating system.
To get started, see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75797&highlight=dma

Hi skiierguy,
most dvd-roms i had were locked to 2x speed when reading CSS encoded data. I think that's because of the noise while playing a movie.
To circumvent this you'd need a hacked firmware.

MvB: is it safe to use hacked firmware? If not, is it worth the risk (aka does it significantly increase read speeds)? Assuming it is permissible to inquire about hacked firmware here, where could I find this sort of firmware?

Found this on a web site, it might even be in your owners manual SpeedRead is enabled by pressing and holding down the eject button for a few seconds. Once the LED has blinked 3 times, releasing the button will eject the tray. According to the user manual this feature is only used when the DVD disk uses CSS copy protection. "SpeedRead changes the default DVD read speed to 5X-12X for single layer DVD, or 3X-to 8X CAV for dual layer DVD disks." Link (http://www.justechn.com/reviews/articles/2004/06/14/plextor-PX-708A.php)

I've never had a problem with hacked firmware that changes the rip and region. Only when it changes burn speeds have I had problems.
