DVD Decrypter and Walking Tall

I borrowed Walking Tall over the weekend from the video shop and it caused a few problems. DVD Decrypter couldn't read it as after about 30% it just kept retying to read the disc, DVD Shrink gave a CRC error at about the same percentage. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck decrypting this disc.

I assume it was a german rental version?

You can get around it by importing a PSL file to combat the newer version of the protection.

Will there be an update for DVD Decrypter to handle this kind of protection? Or is there a way for the user to generate this file?

Yes I'd already made changes to the program before hearing about this problem with this disc.

Those changes already made it possible to rip the disc - I just exported the PSL file from the new (currently in beta) version.

3.5.2.0 will work straight out of the box - so to speak.

That's good news.

Can these protected sectors be quickly found, or will there need to be some sort of analysis phase to find them before the backup can start? It might be good if this is an option so that the backup process is not slowed un-necessarily for discs that don't have these protected sectors.

It's done instantly when you put the disc in. You wouldn't even notice it taking any time at all.

If you look in the log, 3.5.1.0 mentions structure protection being found. All I've had to do is tweak the algorithm a bit to find the ones (protected areas) it missed.

I've also ripped the DVD last week with Decrypter 3.5.1.0 - no problems in IFO Mode with stream processing (also no probs with Gothika and Decrypter before the new version came out)

Throw away your fucking One-Klick-Garbage like Shrink etc. and compile your backups with Maestro or Scenarist and CCE if needed.

First, you'll have no problems and second, you can watch your backups without getting damage of your eyes caused by bad quality from backups looking like a VCD :-)

Were yours german rental discs? If not, they wouldnt have had protection on them.

Old versions of the program would in no way have coped with the protection on these discs.

Maybe IFO mode would work, but that's about it. As most people rip in File mode or use ISO mode, that's not much use to them.

Of course I had the German Rental Version.

I ripped it with Decrypter 3.5.1.0 in IFO Mode and had no problems. Decrypter showed "structure protection found" at startup, but ripping with a Pioneer A-06 worked fine. I haven't tried it in File Mode.

But I think the protection here is not in a VOB from the Main Movie, it looks like it is before or after the main movie. On the Gothika DVD the protection was in the first VOB of the Main Movie, Chapter 1 Cells 1-4

May be it depends on the drive, I ripped Gothika with the same protection also with 3.5.0.0 (I think it was 3.5.0.0 - it was the last version before you added the code for structure protected discs) and it worked fine. After startup, Decrypter needed about 2 min. to read the structure (showing populating tree), I unselected the 4 cells with the protection in Chapter 1 and ripping in IFO Mode worked fine without problems. File Mode didn't work, only IFO Mode.

How did you find out which cells had the protection on, Vienna? Was it just guessing because they took a long time to read? Or did DVD Decrypter show it (never having used IFO mode I don't know what the display will show)?

IFO mode is of no use when recompressing with tools like DVDShrink - which, let's be honest, is what most people do.

3.5.0.0 DID have the structure protection code in it, it just wasnt as advanced as that found in 3.5.1.0.

It also fixed another bug in IFO mode where it would read bits it shouldnt do. Versions previous to that would not have even worked in IFO mode on Walking Tall (not sure about Gothika).

The protected cells are marked by when in IFO mode. But unless the version of the program supports the protection, obviously they wont all show up like that.

By using that PSL file, you've got the best copy of the files you can have. And they're still in a format you can use the one click tools on.
