View Full Version : Thinking about resizing to DVB standard Resolution.

First of all , I don't want to make noone confusing about what I'm saying and , obviously , forgive me for my English , as every non-English person in this forum says.

I'm not new in DVD re-authoring , but I'm now having some experiences w/DVB streams (Mpeg-2 streams coming down from SAT through my SkyStar2 PCI-card).

I noticed that DVB specs are very similar to DVD ones and as them are so , they can also be muxed into DVD files (Vobs,Ifos,Bups) as well.

The only thing we must take care with is the stream format in terms of resolution (i.e. some networks broadcasts their streams in 544x576 resolution) but to let one application(for example Scenarist) to treat them as DVD compliant streams we don't need to re-encode them , only patch them to make the application think they are 720x576 or 704x576 or 720x480 or 704x480 , then import them , create the Vobs and re-patch all of them to their real resolution (544x576) .

Going on we can burn as well the obtained DVD-Files and the Stand-alone Player will treat them right (stretching them to video and so on).DvdPatcher can do all this things very well. It patches the SEQ headers in .mpv files and .VOB files too.

This thing made me think about another thing.
We can reduce resolution of our DVDs with less quality loss than reducing them to 352x576 or so . If you play a 544x576 captured SAT stream on TV you got SAT quality playing.
It can be useful for episodic DVDs or for very long films (problematic Saving Private Ryan for example).

All we can make experiments before asking jdobbs ,if possible , to add this feature to the great DVD-RB.
Just DownLoad DVDPatcher from doom9 , prepare your DVDs w/RB , add the resize line(i.e. LanczosResize(544,576)) to all the .avs files w/RB-Opt , then encode , patch all m2v files obtained to 720x576 , Rebuild , patch all obtained .VOB files to 544x576 and Burn.
Watch the result and , if you want to be useful , post your comments , results and impressions here.

I'm grateful to all of you that will become testers for this thinking of mine , and hope to help the developing of this REAL GREAT app.

Thank you all in advance ,

TuRiSOft!!!

Hi TuRiSOft, remember that when you need to author DVB stream captured from SAT you can also simply use DVD Lab Pro, a cheap and great program to author DVD that accepts without any problem all DVB format size (obvius your SAT stream must have standard GOPs), so you don't need any patch and your work is simple.

I think also your is a good idea, but I test that not all DVD players accept "non DVD standard" resolution (i.e. 544x576 or 480x576).

Never heard about it.
Where can I get a copy?

I would recommend you always resize to either 480x576 or 720x576. It may play it -- but it isn't standard. Unless you are planning to use the same DVD player for the rest of your life you will be taking a risk.

not for dvd. 480x576 is svcd compliant but not dvd compliant. so 720x576 or 352x576 is a better reccomendation. :)

Whoops. My mind was thinking 352, but my hands were typing 480. Correct.

great authoring sw,very cheap for PRO version

And like you, I also have a lot of captured DVB material burned to
DVD in their original resolutions.

First test your player with all resolutions without resizing as it
will always make picture worse.

Horizontal res. you should try : 352,480,528,544 and 704

Usually cheap chinese players plays them all without a problem, those
from well known companies are problematic. As they are very cheap I
think it's worth to buy one just for DVB streams.

It will save you a lot of time and if you really need to resize for some friend you can always rip untouched streams from your archive copy.

Mine (original is Skyworth - China) plays anything even raw mpeg files

Just prepare some +-RW discs and go to shops for some tests
