avi stored on network skipping

On my home network, I have avi movies I have compressed with both divx and xvid. I used windows media player 10 to play these movies. No problem when the movie is on the local drive, but when the avi is on a network drive the movie skips.

I first tried playing over a wireless connect. I also tried over a hard wire connection. I have 100 base T network. Same result.

Same result when I was using windows media player 9

Any ideas?

Some ugly (isn't they all?) antivirus-software?

I would like to here some technical reasons before trying other players.

I don't use anti-virus software.

trying other players and writing here if some of them didn't have this problem will be helpful to determine the cause of the problem.
try VLC for example
it is one of the few players that doesn't use microsofts direct show.
if it works, then its probably a direct show problem
also how is the CPU usage compared to playing the same file on the local drive?
