Is a VOB file Mpeg2
I ask the question because, I can find software to convert VOB to AVI, VCD, SVCD, DivX.
All I want to do is make a mpeg2 file (PAL 25fps 720 x 576)
I like, for my and the families ammusement, to cut up video files and join back in a my chosen sequence
I have read other articles on this forum and extracted the vob files to the harddrive with DVD decrypter
Now I have VOB files, I can't find a method of converting them to PAL 25fps 720x576
Can anybody help please

A VOB file can contain MPEG-2 inside.

Well, why do you want to do that ? The video format inside the VOB is DVD compliant anyway, so even if it's something else than PAL 25fps 720x576, I wouldn't change it.
To demux video and audio files, you can use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. It's called Stream Processing. You select the stream you want (as a VOB can contain more than only one MPEG stream, and it's also possible that one part is in one VOB, and the second part in another), and DVD Decrypter will demux the elementary streams. If you want to muliplex them together, just use TMPGEnc or something like that.

Thanks Geek for replying
If the VOB file is as I know it to be DVD compliant
How can I get it into Ulead Videostudio 8?
It can't read the vob file, that's why I was tying to convert it
I don't know what demux means, so I will have to read up on that

I see.

Yeah, that is what you need to know. I'll tell you:
Files that contain audio and video (and maybe even more, like subtitles, for example) are so-called container formats. They are no video formats themselves, they just contain the streams.
AVI is a common used container for PC, for example. The video and audio inside can be encoded with every existing codec available.
And so are VOB and MPG. They contain the video stream and audio stream together. The VOB can contain even more, like multiple video, audio, and subtitle streams.
Though the container is a different one, the video and audio inside are the same, for DVD video it will usually be MPEG-2 for video and AC3 for audio.
Now you can demultiplex, means extract the video and audio files from the container, then you get at least two files, one video file, one audio.
Multplexing means putting video and audio (and in case of VOB also subtitles) together, synchronized, and stored inside a container.
Since multiplexing and demultiplxing means just sorta combine and separate, the video and audio streams won't be altered in any way, they still remain the same.
So, if you want to have an MPEG-2 file out of your VOB, you just need to demultiplex the video and audio files from the VOB, and multiplex both single streams, the so-called Elementary Streams, together as an MPEG-2 file.
The video and audio will be unaltered, means you didn't convert them, you still have the unaltered original, just in a different container.

...How can I get it into Ulead Videostudio 8?...
I assume you're trying to use a commercial DVD, which usually contain encrypted files. If so, they must be decrypted before they can be used, in a process commonly known as "ripping."
Here are some guides that may help:
http://www.doom9.org/dvd-structure.htm describes the structure of files on a DVD, and what they contain.
http://www.doom9.org/descrambling-guides.htm describes three different ripping tools, including the most popular tool used by our members, DVD Decrypter.

OK thanks Guys
This is what I have done so far using your help and reading elswhere in the forum
I extracted the VOB & demuxed with DVD decrypter, to get the M2v & AC3 files
Videostudio doesn't understand AC3, so I used headache3 to change to wav
I then muliplexed with TMPgen to make the mpg file
demuxing took no time, ac3 to wave took no time,
but boy multiplexing took ages, is that right?
